I walked out of there as fast as I could. I grabbed the empty cart, pushed it down the corridors, and into the kitchen. The cart wheel caught and it turned to the side, falling to the tiled floor with a loud clank.

My shoulders sagged.

“I’m proud of your behavior,” Rue said from somewhere behind me.

I faced her. “What behavior? Me sleeping with Conri?”

She glared at me. “Don’t turn your anger toward me. I’m not the bad guy. No one here is.” She walked past me and picked up the fallen cart. “I know you didn’t choose this. I know he simply picked you from the rest, probably because you’re one of the most spirited and the most beautiful of all of us, and … I don’t know. I don’t know why, but I’m glad.” She rested a hand on my shoulder. “If he was hurting you, then I wouldn’t think so, but he’s not. He grants you freedom, and you use it to take care of Minsi, of us. That’s noble of you.”

It didn’t feel noble.

It felt like an uphill battle, one that hadn’t moved an inch in the past year.

Yes, I was grateful for living in the former alpha’s house instead of the school with the others. I was glad Conri had allowed me to take care of Minsi and keep her at her house.

But I didn’t understand why.

He said I amused him, and that was it.

I never pressed it again, afraid that if I did, he would revoke my privileges.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Rue offered me a sweet smile. “What for? You haven’t done anything wrong.” She turned to the sink. “Now, let’s clean up this mess.”

Like a well-oiled machine, Rue and I fell into our routine. We washed up the pans, pots, and utensils we had used to make lunch, and we cleaned the kitchen.

When we were done, the demon in charge of Rue took her away—to another classroom outside the others. Her lonely prison.

Tomorrow, we would do all of this again.

Just like we had been doing for almost a year.
