“Shit,” I muttered.
Raika came to my side and looked out the window. “You need to leave. Now.”
“I know, I know.” I turned to her, wound my arm around her waist, pulled her to me. “I don’t want to.”
She pushed against my shoulders. “You have to.”
I leaned into her, brushing my lips to hers. A soft moan rose to her mouth as she kissed me back. She relaxed in my arms, but then she pushed me back again. “Please, Shane, they can’t find you here. They will kill you on the spot if they do.”
Not only that. Keeva and Lorie knew about me and the full moon. They had done this to me. If they saw me … they would tell Conri about it. They could use it against me.
Still, it was damn hard to leave her here.
“Raika, I might not come back until it’s time for the attack.”
She frowned. “So … six days.”
“Yeah. I need to help my friends in the meantime.” I hated lying to her, but it was better if she didn’t know about this yet. “It’ll go by fast, don’t worry.”
She scoffed. “I’m not worried.” The joking tone of her voice brought a smile to my lips.
I fished the potion from the back pocket of my pants and drank it. I felt the tingling of the potion taking effect immediately and I pressed my lips to Raika once more before I became invisible.
“I’ll be back soon,” I whispered to her. “I’ll send you a signal when we’re ready. Please, be careful.”
A knot appeared between her brows. “You too.”
I paused at the window, not because I was watching for the patrols—though it would be easier if no one saw the window opening and closing by itself—but because my feelings flooded my chest. I wanted to tell her more. I wanted to let Raika know exactly how I felt about her.
But I had to believe we would have time for that later.
Conri and the witches came into the house and I silently slid the window open, climbed out, and left.
But this time, my heart stayed behind.
