Damn him.

I grabbed the milk from the fridge, a mug from the cupboard, and set them down on the large marble island. And then my day was ruined when Conri entered the kitchen with one of his big smiles.

My stomach turned and my appetite disappeared.

Couldn’t I at least have breakfast in peace?

“Good morning, Raika,” he said, his voice upbeat. “Ready to make better choices today?”

I filled the mug with milk and put it in the microwave. “What do you want?”

“I have a surprise for you.”

Oh, shit, a surprise from Conri? “I don’t want anything from you.”

Conri gestured to another demon to come in. The demon nodded his head, grabbed a large box from the couch, and hurried to Conri’s side.

“I have an appointment tonight in New York City,” Conri said. “And you’re coming with me.”

I stared at him, sure I hadn’t heard him right.

Two feelings warred within me. I hadn’t left the pack lands in so long. Most wolves left the pack lands to study and become something the pack needed, like another doctor, or a civil engineer, then they came back to live with the pack. This place was home. We were born, lived, and died here.

Before the attack, my life was far from perfect. My family had been demoted to the lowest-ranked wolves in the pack by command of the alpha many years before I was born. We had been shunned, scorned, and bullied. There were times when I wished I could leave.

But no one could without a specific order from the alpha. The previous alpha had hated my family with every inch of his soul, so I had been sure I would never leave.

Until now.

But why did Conri want me to come with him to some appointment? In New York City? That was … so far away! Besides, I didn’t want to go anywhere with him, even if that meant leaving the pack lands for a while.

I also couldn’t leave Minsi behind.

“You’re nuts.” I gave him my back and reached for the ground coffee in the cupboard.

I never touched the knob on the cupboard’s door.

Conri's hand closed around a good chunk of my long hair and pulled it down and toward him. I did my best not to yelp and let him know how much that hurt.

“I don’t think you understand, little wolf. I’m not giving you an option. You are coming with me.” He pulled my hair more, forcing me closer. I gritted my teeth and endured the pain in my scalp, in my neck for being twisted in an awkward angle, in my chest for being this close to the devil. He sniffed at me, almost touching his nose to my cheek, making my insides recoil in disgust. Conri jerked his chin toward the demon with the box. “Take that to her bedroom.” He looked at me again. “That’s your dress. Be ready at noon.”

He let me go and I braced my hand on the island, doing my best to contain my rage. There were sharp knives in this kitchen. I could easily cut him.

Kill him.

But then I was sure his wolves would kill me, kill Minsi, and probably kill the rest of the pack.

“What about Minsi?” I asked at his retreating form.

“Rue will stay with her,” was all he said before walking away.

I grabbed the mug with both hands and counted to ten … fifteen … thirty. I almost threw the mug at his back. It would only get me in more trouble.

Not hungry anymore, I dumped the milk in the sink and put the mug in the dishwasher. Since my morning was ruined and I wouldn’t have much time to finish my chores before having to leave with the devil, I needed to start ASAP.

I went upstairs and woke up Minsi so she could have breakfast and we could start her lessons—with demons following our every step.
