I reached for it.

Arms hooked around my shoulders and pulled me back.

“Finally,” Conri said as he knelt beside the trap door and grabbed the crystal with his hands. He cradled it like a baby, his eyes shining. He didn’t look at me when he said, “Get the others.”

The demons tugged at me and pushed me to another corner of the square. Raika grunted as demons did the same to her. Behind us, Conri followed, but slowly, his body entranced by the crystal in his hands.

The demons pushed me to the ground in front of the next black mark. My knees slammed into the concrete. Pain jolted through my legs, and I gritted my teeth.

“Do it,” a demon said, kicking me in the back.

“Stop it!” Raika snapped at him. One of the demons turned to her and raised his hand.

“Stop,” I told him. “I’ll do it.”

The demon lowered his hand.

I looked up at the dark sky. The full moon was almost in position. I need a few more minutes, then this would be over. I had to stall a couple more minutes.

Knowing I couldn’t escape this one without consequences, I repeated the process. I placed my fingers in the holes and didn’t flinch this time when the needles pricked my skin.

The trap door opened and this time, I didn’t even reach for the crystal. I stood and stepped back as Conri rushed forward and grabbed the second crystal in his hands. He stared at both of them, practically salivating with joy.

What was his deal with the crystals?

“Next one,” Conri said without taking his eyes off the crystals.

This time, I slowed my steps, giving the demons pushing me a harder time. Halfway toward the next mark, I felt it.

The deep pull inside me, the warmth in my bones, the magic spreading through my skin.

The curse acted.

I glanced at Raika as I began shifting. “Run. Hide.”

Her eyes widened.

A second later, I lost all conscious thoughts.

My limbs extended, my height increased, my form changed.

The Shadow Wolf had arrived.
