Shane groaned. “Raika …”

“I want to know. As your mate, I have a right to know.” I hated playing the mate card, but it was true. He shouldn’t hide anything from me.

Even if I was hiding my unknown power over the shadows from him.

He let out a sigh. “After they took me away, the Nightmist witches cursed me. They used blood magic to make me what they called a Shadow Wolf during the full moon. Every full moon, I lose control. The Shadow Wolf overtakes me and I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve been told I attack everyone, any of my friends … but you. Though, we can’t count on that. We don’t know why, if it’s because you’re my mate, or something else. I would rather not risk it again.”

“How can we break it?”

“A Nightmist witch needs to do another spell, using blood magic, to undo it. It’s supposed to be simple. But the problem is finding a willing Nightmist witch.”

“We’ll find one. While we look for the crystals, we can also look for the witches. ”

"There aren’t many of them left now, and I bet they are all hiding.”

“It doesn’t matter. We’ll find them.” I was sure we would. I didn’t know how or when, but we certainly would.

“There’s more,” he said, his voice low.

My back straightened. “What is it?”

“This curse … it’s supposed to take over. Not just during the full moon. The longer the curse afflicts me, the worse it’ll be. Soon, I won’t shift into the Shadow Wolf just during the full moon. It’ll start getting longer and longer, and then it’ll happen when I’m angry … until I lose myself to the curse completely.”

I gasped. “You’re saying, if we don’t break the curse soon, you’ll become the Shadow Wolf.”

He nodded.

I reached for him through the bars. His hand met mine halfway and he entwined his fingers with mine.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

“That won’t happen. We’ll break this curse before that.”

“We need to break the curse, to find the crystals, rebuild the town, make sure everything is okay.” He let out a long sigh. “We have lots to do.”

I nodded. “That we do.”

“And we’ll do everything together. I’m not leaving you alone ever again.”

“You better not.” I reached in with my other arm and soft-punched him in the ribs.

He groaned, pretending to be hurt. Then Shane brought our hands up and kissed the top of mine, his lips soft and warm on my skin. “That’s a promise.”
