Chapter 5

Addie

I had seen the warehouse before, but I had never been inside until today. I followed Nate inside while Joe stayed in the car to keep watch. We headed through a maze of crowded hallways until we reached the back of the warehouse. In a bare room stood five men. Three were in the middle of the room, and the other two were at the front, watching them. One of them walked over to us when we came in.

“They were tricky little fuckers. But we found them,” he said to Nate.

“Who are they?” I asked.

The man looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time. “Hey, Addie.”

“Hello.”

He looked at Nate expectantly.

“Addie is our new Underboss. She’s being groomed to take over for the boss when….”

The guy nodded.

“Addie, this is Ricky. And that over there is Mike.” Nate nodded to another man.

“Uhh…yeah well, the warehouse is run by these three guys.” Rickie nodded to the three men standing in the center of the room. “If anything is wrong with the books or the product, they—”

“They should know about it and if they don’t, then it’s also a problem,” I finished.

“Exactly,” Ricky agreed.

I had never seen Ricky before, not that I remembered anyway. His face wasn’t that memorable, but he seemed nice enough.

“Did they say anything?” I eyed the men from across the room. They watched us, knowing we were talking about them.

“No. They were waiting for the boss to arrive.” Rickie folded his arms over his chest, eyeing the men. “The one in the middle is Ray. The guy on his right with the birthmark under his eye is Frank, and the other one is Matt.”

“Okay,” said Nate.

We joined Mike in front of the three men. They stared at us, and we stared back. It was my experience to wait and they would just start talking. As planned, the first one to speak was one of the three men.

“When’s the boss getting’ in?” Frank glanced around the room. “So, we can go ahead and straighten this out.”

Ray was the shortest in the group. His light brown hair was disheveled, and his clothes were wrinkled. Made me wonder if they pulled him out of bed or if they had to rough him up to get him here. Matt and Frank weren’t disheveled. In fact, they didn’t even look worried about what was going on. Both of them stood tall, backs straight and heads held high.

“This is Adriene, the boss’ daughter,” Nate said. “She’s the new Underboss.”

Frank scoffed. He glanced at Matt and started laughing.

“You can’t be serious,” said Matt. The two men laughed a little harder.

“Interesting,” I said just low enough for only Nate to hear me.

“What is?”

I pulled out my gun and pointed it at Frank. Without another word I pulled the trigger. The loud pop sliced through the air. Everything, everyone went quiet. The men around me took a step back. Frank’s body crumpled to the ground as blood slowly trickled from the hole in his head.

I turned my attention to Matt, who was no longer in a laughing mood. He waved his hands in front of him as if they were magic and could stop a bullet, stumbling backwards.

“I’m sor—”

I aimed for his head and pulled the trigger. His eyes went wide with surprise at first and vacant as his body slumped to the ground.
