“Go on through.” The man stepped back, motioning us through.

Nate pulled up to the outside of a warehouse and parked, turning off the engine. Then he held out his hand and raised an eyebrow.

“Fine.” I unsheathed my weapon and handed it to him and he slid it into the glove box of the car.

“And any other weapon you have on you.” Nate held out his hand expectantly.

I rolled my eyes, my breath coming out in a rush as I opened my purse and pulled out a switchblade and a two-shot Derringer.

He lifted an eyebrow.

“That’s all,” I said flatly. “Unless you want me to give you my hands, since they’re considered to be dangerous weapons, too.”

He chuckled, clocking up my weapons in the glove box. ‘No, I think enough hands have been taken lately, thank you very much.” He motioned with his head toward the building. “Let’s go.”

What could he be showing me that would piss me off? What was the family into? I knew about the drugs and money laundering, but I didn’t think we even dabbled in prostitution. What else was there?

I took several deep breaths before I got to the door. I told myself that I would be levelheaded and not lose my temper until we were no longer in the building. I repeated this over and over, looking around as we approached. It was a plain building in the middle of nowhere.

“How many warehouses and factories do we own?”

“I’m not sure but if you really want to know I’ll do a check for you.”

I thought about it for a second. “I do. Thank you.”

He smiled faintly but it disappeared the second he touched the door. Nate took a deep breath before opening it.

I followed him inside, bracing myself for anything. There was a gate a few steps away from the front door with two heavily armed men keeping guard.

“What is this place?” I asked but Nate didn’t answer me. As soon as one of the men saw Nate, he immediately opened the gate and I followed him through. The gate creaked as it opened and then slammed shut and locked behind us, making me jump. It was like going to prison or what I imagined people felt like going through prison gates and hearing them lock behind you. There was no way out and I didn’t have my gun.

Ignoring the dread rising in my stomach like bile, I took in my surroundings. It looked like an old factory or maybe an old warehouse.

Then my heart stopped when I saw the cages.

“Seriously?” I asked through gritted teeth. Every muscle in my body tensed. I wanted to hit something or someone. Who was the fucker that let this happen?

Women, some beaten and bruised, some not, but all had the same terrified look in their eyes. Some of those eyes stared at me, silently pleading.

“Is this the next shipment?” Nate asked loud enough to grab my attention. His eyes met mine and I took my focus off the girls and back to the reason why we were here.

“Yeah.” A pudgy looking man I had never seen before stood next to Nate. He had gold rings on every finger. His white shirt had tiny red dots near the sleeves and his collar. “The truck will be here in a few. Who is this?”

“Right, this is the boss’ daughter—”

“Little Addie,” the man finished. “You probably don’t remember me, but I was around when you were little, well before I got sent upstate. You look just like your mother.”

My head snapped up. “You knew my mom?”

He smiled. “Yeah, she was a good woman. Bit of a firecracker but she was good people.”

Nate nodded slowly. “Explains a few things.”

“I’m uh…Big Bob.”

“Hi, Big Bob.” My smile faded as I looked around the room.

He smiled when I said his name. I didn’t remember meeting him before. My childhood was, let’s say, a bit of a blur. So many people came in and out of the house I hardly remember everyone. He could have been one of them, but it was hard to say.
