Chapter 9

Addie

My father was right. I needed allies. Without them, I could easily be pushed out after he died. And when the family pushed you out, you usually ended up full of holes and buried in concrete. So, yes. I needed allies. But I didn’t know how to get them. Sure, these men followed my father but that didn’t men they would follow me blindly. Which made sense. I wouldn’t blindly follow any one either. My father could give me his title, but he couldn’t give me their respect. I had to earn it. And I needed another business venture to replace the income we got from human trafficking.

I had to think of something else fast. We couldn’t do it anymore and I couldn’t lead the family knowing that women were being kidnapped and sold for our benefit. My father seemed to share my feelings. Even though he hadn’t stopped it, he didn’t seem to like what they were doing. I couldn’t figure out why he had gone along with it. Unless he had just become too tired to fight and had been choosing his battles wisely.

Now, what I really needed was information and I knew just the person to tell me everything I needed to know.

“I’m sorry, ma’am.” Nate bit his lower lip, trying to hide his smile, getting the same look he got when he tried to figure something out. “Are you saying you want to take me out on a date?”

“No!” I blurted out. “I’m saying I’m taking you to dinner.”

“I’m sorry I don’t date much but isn’t that—”

“No! No, it’s not a—”

Nate laughed. “My boss wants to take me to dinner.”

“I’m not!” I rolled my eyes, knowing he was enjoying this a bit too much. “Would you just get in the fucking car?”

He chuckled, trying to hide his amusement. “Yes ma’am.”

I told him where we were going when he finally got in and he seemed surprised. It wasn’t one of the usual places the Kingsley family went and that was the point. I wanted to get all the information I could from Nate, and I figured it would be easier if a member of the family wasn’t constantly walking through the door.

The restaurant Sauce was supposed to be the best new restaurant in town.

“That’s a stupid name.” Nate said as he opened my door.

“I know, but hopefully the food is good.” I took his hand and let him help me out. He placed his hand on the small of my back and walked with me up the stairs. Then gave his name to the maître d.

We were seated in a corner booth at the back of the restaurant. Our waitress, Leslie, basically eye fucked Nate as he ordered his drink. She didn’t even glance my way when I asked for a bourbon neat.

When she left to get our drinks, Nate picked up his menu.

I chuckled as I eyed the menu. “I feel like I should leave you two alone. Geez.”

He smiled. “Nah. She ain’t my type.”

I glanced at her while she talked to the bartender. She was about the same age as me, with platinum blonde hair, perky tits, a small waist and a round ass. She was every man’s type especially if you factor in the fact that she didn’t seem too bright.

“So, what is your type?”

“Bossy.” The menu hid most of his face, but not his eyes. Bright green like new leaves on a tree or seedlings when they first sprout out of the ground.

“Bossy, huh?”

He smiled.

“Yeah, you seem like the type.” Don’t fuck him, Addie. Never fuck the help.

He put the menu down on the table and leaned forward. “I don’t fuck my boss so that’s not something you need to worry about.”

What I was thinking must have been written all over my face. “Has your boss ever been a woman before?”

Nate blinked as he cocked his head to the side. “You know what? You gotta point. I take it back then.”

Leslie returned with our drinks and gave Nate her undivided attention. He ordered a steak while I ordered a meat lovers salad.
