The corners of his mouth curled up into a smile. “Now see? I was waiting on you to ask that.”

“I was going to ask my father but since we’re here and you’re being so honest….” I shrugged. “I thought I mays as well ask.”

He chuckled. “The Kingsley and Sky families used to be tight until… okay. Lucian Sky is the Boss, he has three children: Charles, Lowell and Lyla.” Nate looked around, making sure that no one was listening. “Lyla was hanging out with a few guys from the Kingsley family and rumor has it that they raped her. Your father refused to punish those responsible and there has been bad blood ever since.”

“Rumor?” My eyes nearly bugged out of my head.

“Well, that’s what they said.” Nate shrugged as he sat back, looking down at his beer. Then he took a sip and looked into my eyes.

“What do you think?”

His teeth grazed his bottom lip. “I think it happened. Who the guys were, I don’t know. I’ve never seen the video.”

My eyes widened. “They recorded it? Why?”

“They were young, stupid, and drunk.” He shrugged. “Probably high. Or maybe it was something they did on occasion, I don’t know. Rumor has it that Reggie was there.”

Of course, he was. Reggie seemed to always be around when bad things were happening. “Do you believe the rumors?”

He bit his lip again.

“So, that’s a yes.”

He eyed his empty beer glass and nodded. “Yeah, I believe it. And if they had done that to my daughter, then yeah, I would hate us, too.”

“You have a kid?”

He smiled. “What else do you want to know about the Sky family?”

“Can you set up a meeting?”

He leaned back. His head tilted slightly as he stared at me. “Yeah. I can do that.”

“Thank you.”

He nodded slowly and took out his phone. A few minutes later he shoved his phone back in his pocket. “They’ll get back to me in a couple of days with a place and time.”

“Thanks.” I laid the money down on the bill and pushed it to the center of the table, leaving a big enough tip for Leslie to love Nate even more.

“That’s what I’m here for.” Nate rose to his feet and held my chair, ever the gentleman.

Leslie slipped Nate a piece of paper on our way out the door. It had her number on it, no doubt. He slipped it into his pocket.

“You gonna call her?” I smirked as I slid into the car.

“I told you I like them bossy,” he teased, closing my door.

“Why’d you take it then?” I asked when he slid into the driver’s seat.

“Because I’m not an asshole and I didn’t want to embarrass her.” He started the car and he pulled out onto the main road a few minutes later.

On our way home, I thought about going to the Gold party house, but I wasn’t really in the mood. I just wanted to go home and try to come up with a plan.

Suddenly, a sharp pulsing pain started in my right shoulder and radiated through my entire body.

“Get down!” Nate yelled, pulling me into the console of the car.

I crouched down in the front seat as the car jerked forward. Glass rained down around me. I covered my face, hoping to keep the glass out as I reached for the Derringer I kept in my purse. I felt the car pick up speed as the sound of bullets got farther and farther away.

I took off my seatbelt and turned around, but the car that was shooting at us was pulling away. I shot back, but we were too far away to do any good.

“Nate?” I turned around just as the car slammed into a stop sign and I went flying through the front windshield.
