Eli calmly turned to face Lyle and then he took a step closer. And then another and another. Each step was controlled and slow. He inched closer and closer to Lyle and no one in the room tried to stop him. When he was inches away from Lyle’s face he stopped.

“I am the man my mother raised me to be. But my father was the best hitman any of our families have ever seen and he raised me too. Don’t forget that.” His voice was steady and calm. It never wavered, not in anger or fear. He turned back to my father. “Again, if there is anything we can do to help you settle this matter, don’t hesitate to ask.”

My father nodded. “Thank you, Eli, and thank your father for me as well.”

“Thanks for coming, Eli.” I said, grateful that he had come to see me when I was in the hospital. He didn’t give anything away in front of these men, but there was more to him than what met the eye.

Eli glanced at me on his way out of the room and nodded. We didn’t speak much in front of people. Everyone knew we were friends. And because the families got along, it wasn’t a problem. Whether people knew we had sex or not, I didn’t know. But I didn’t want to give anything away.

“So, if it wasn’t the Gold family or the Sky family, then who was it?” asked Kent. I watched as the men exchanged looks but no one said a thing.

“I want answers and I want them now.” My father slowly rose to his feet, looking as if this matter had taken its toll on him along with the cancer. “Boys, don’t come back in this fucking house until you have some. Everyone, get out.”

They left quietly.

“Now what?” I sat up on the sofa as he leaned back in his chair.

“Don’t worry about that now, Addie.” He handed me a drink and sat beside me. Then he patted my foot that was curled up under me. “You just focus on getting some rest and healing. Leave the rest to me.”
