He exhaled loudly and relaxed back into his chair. “I was just telling Addie that she needs to pick an advisor.”

“And I did.” I smiled, gauging his reaction.

My father stared at me, waiting.

Nate smirked, cocking his head to the side. “Anyone I know?”

“You.”

Nate blinked. “I… I… Boss, can she do that?” His head snapped toward my father, searching for an answer.

“She can and she is,” I answered for him. “You’re honest, you’re loyal, and you know what I’m capable of.”

A smile crept across Nate’s lips.

“Do you accept?” My father arched an eyebrow, his expression serious.

Nate slowly nodded. “Yes sir.”

“Okay.” My father shook his hand. “And thank you for protecting my baby. You’ll make a great advisor.”

“Thank you, sir.” Nate released his hand and then stood up and looked over at me. “I have something that I need to take care of. Do you need anything before I go?”

It took a moment for me to realize he was talking to me and not my father. “Well, I was told that I need bodyguards. You trust anyone?”

“I know a couple of guys.” A smile lit Nate’s face. “I’ll make some calls.”

“Thank you.”

“Yes ma’am.” He nodded to my father and headed toward the door.

“Wait.”

Nate spun around.

“As for the fucker that tried to kill me, Dad I don’t want you to worry about it.”

He blinked, opening his mouth to speak. But I held my hand up, stopping him.

“No. Don’t worry about it. Nate and I will take care of it, and we’ll tell you what we find.” I kissed the top of his head and reached over to steal his bacon, but he jerked it away, smiling.

Father closed his mouth and glanced at Nate, who tried his best to give him a reassuring smile. My father sighed and then nodded, then he sniffled a few times. “Oh, my little girl is becoming a crime boss.”

“Dad, don’t do that.” I rolled my eyes as I gave him a hug.

“I’m just so proud.” He wiped a fake tear from the corner of his eye.

“Uh, excuse me.”

Both our heads snapped up toward the door and Kent stood there, smiling.

“Kent?” I stood, wrapping my arms around myself.

“Hey Addie.” He nodded toward the other room. “Can I talk to you for a moment?”

I glanced at my father who shrugged and then I turned back to Kent. “Sure. We can talk in the living room.”

“Go on in,” I said to Kent. “I’ll see you there.”
