Father laughed. “Well, sweetheart, now you are.”

I took another sip, starting to feel the effects of the bourbon. “Do you know what the task will be? What I’ll have to do?”

He shook his head. “I don’t. But whatever it is, you’ll do right by the family, and you’ll come through with flying colors.” He kissed my forehead and then looked into my eyes. “And that’s what’s important.”

“Okay.” I pulled him in for a hug, wishing I could hold onto him forever. Although I welcomed the position, I never wanted to lose my father to get it.

“Now….” He got to his feet, weaving a bit from the liquor. “Go out and celebrate! You’re the new King of the Kingsley Family.” He gave my hand a gentle squeeze as I took his arm, smelling of cedar and cloves.

“I’ll walk you out, Padre,” I said, leaning my head on his shoulder, pretending that he was helping me and not the opposite.

He nodded, patting my arm. “Have fun tonight, love and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

I laughed as we approached the door. “Well, that kind of leaves me wide open now. Doesn’t it?”

We both laughed.

“Shush.” He held a finger to his lips. “Don’t tell anyone.”

Outside, Max Ricci, a capo and Father’s driver, opened the limo door. “Good evening, Mr. Kingsley.”

Father nodded. “Take me home, Max.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Have a good night.” I kissed Father on the cheek and then turned to Max. “See that he gets home safely.”

“Yes, Miss Kingsley.” Max closed the door and was in the driver’s seat a moment later.

As the limo pulled away from the curb, I knew just where I wanted to go to have some fun.
