CHAPTER5

The Next Day~Olivia

I waitedin my car for a few minutes before going in. Yesterday ended in a complete bust. Or that’s what I thought. I scooped up the papers and shuffled them into a semi neat pile on his desk. He didn’t say a word, but he didn’t have to because his face said enough. With his hands balled into fists, and his voice low, he dismissed me for the rest of the day and told me to come back in the morning. I offered to fix the order of the papers, but he held up his hand in protest.

I chalked it up to him being upset at my clumsiness and walked out. Exhausted and hungry, I made my way to my favorite taco joint, then made a pit stop at Fur Baby Delight for Oreo's special treat. Mia reassured me that he would forget all about it, but how could he forget about me falling flat on my face and messing up his documents. The alarm on my phone blared, knocking me out of my 15-minute daydream, and I killed the engine.

Trying to go unnoticed, I made my way to my desk when his office door swung open, and two men walked out. Settling into my chair, I powered on the computer and glanced at his calendar. His schedule was normally filled with daily outings and numerous meetings over zoom, but today stood out like a sore thumb because he had nothing scheduled. My phone buzzed, and I pressed the decline button. It wasn’t even 10 a.m. and that was the twentieth missed call from Damien. Setting my phone back on the desk, it buzzed again, and this time I didn’t bother hitting the declined button.

Squeezing my phone in my hand, I hurried down the hall in the hopes I would be out of earshot from Aiden. Once the line clicked over, Damien started his groveling, a river of empty promises and lots of lies. I pleaded with him to stop calling, only for his voice to raise in anger and for him to call me every degrading name he could think of. I closed my eyes to fight back the tears and jabbed my finger on the end call button.

Mia urged me to change my number because blocking him wasn’t enough. No matter how many numbers I blocked, he would call from another. My stomach grumbled, reminding me that I hadn’t had my breakfast, and begged me to eat something. I started back toward my desk but took a quick glance into his office. Unaware that he could see me through the crack, our eyes met, and I shot my eyes to the floor. You’re an idiot, Olivia.

“Olivia…” The timbre in his voice made the hairs on the back of my neck stand as my name rolled off his tongue. So smooth, so dark.

I sauntered inside and tucked a lock of hair behind my ear. He sat relaxed in his chair, with his legs spread wide and the top button of his dress shirt unbuttoned. I didn’t take note of his cologne yesterday, but today it wrapped around my lungs like a snake as I inhaled. It reminded me of wood, with a hint of sage.

I clasped my hands in front of my skirt and found his gaze. “Yes.”

“Are you free for the next two days?” He rested his elbow on the arm of his chair and traced the pad of his thumb over his lip.

I racked my brain and chewed the inside of my cheek as I contemplated. “I believe so. Why?”

“Good. Then you won’t mind joining me on my little business trip.”

“Oh, um…well…” My words turned to mush as I tried to form a coherent sentence.

He swiveled in his chair and faced the window. “Is there a problem?”

“My cat, Oreo. It’s fine. I can find a sitter for her.” I swallowed and picked at my cuticles as I waited for his response.

With his attention still fixated on the skyline, my flesh tingled when he jutted his jaw in my direction, and the corner of his mouth lifted.

“Turn, and stand in the corner,”he commanded.

I froze, unsure of what to do, and then he repeated his words. I turned and walked to the corner. In an attempt to keep my heart from busting out of my chest, I rested one hand across my chest to give me comfort. Silence draped the office.

The leather of his chair squeaked underneath him as he stood, and the hairs on the back of my neck took notice. My mouth turned dry, and my pulse staggered. The breath lodged in my throat pushed past my lips when he placed a hand on my shoulder. Then goose bumps scattered across my skin when his soft lips found the shell of my ear. Conflict, fear, and curiosity pulled at me.

“Have you been a bad girl?” he whispered in my ear.

I shook my head, and his slow barbed laughter oozed into my ear. A wave of heat curled down my spine and landed right between my legs. How could I be confused yet turned on at the same time?

“Are you sure about that? I beg to differ.” His hands slithered down to my waist, and he wrapped his muscular arms around me.

It was an odd feeling, an unfamiliar one, but it evoked a sense of safety.

I leaned into his hard chest. “I’m not a bad girl. I’m a good girl.”

His grip tightened, and he pressed into me. I gasped as I felt the hardness of his erection jabbing into me.

“Oh, you’ll definitely be daddy’s good little girl once I’m done with you, but right now, your a naughty girl, and naughty girls stand in corners.”

His python grip loosened, and the heat of his body evaporated as he stepped away and walked toward his desk. I wanted to steal a glance as he continued to work, but I couldn’t. Staying as still as a statue, I made the wooden oak wall my muse as I burned with humiliation. I liked the surge of electricity that rippled down my spine when I uttered those forbidden words. Good girl.

It made my mouth water and had me aching in places it shouldn’t. After my ten-minute punishment ended, he dismissed me. I remained in the corner for a few extra seconds to process what just happened, and then quietly rushed back to my desk. He followed my movements, his gaze unyielding as he watched me fidget with my computer.

It wasn’t until an incoming call came through that I was able to release the breath I was holding in a wave of relief. With his attention on the call, I sat back, taking note of the goose bumps that lined my arms. I didn’t know what possessed him to put me in a corner, but I liked it, a lot. I continued with my daily work. I learned his schedule pretty quickly. He took his lunches from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and needed a coffee refill around 2:00 p.m. He spent the end of the day with his security force, which put me in charge of all incoming calls and emails until he returned.

Luckily the notes attached to his hectic calendar provided me with the answers for the few calls that did come in. The day flew by, and in the blink of an eye, the clock read 5:30 p.m. I shut down my laptop and shoved it into my bag. Hoping to sneak out without being noticed, I attempted to speed walk to the elevators when his call stopped me in my tracks.

“Be ready tonight,” he said as he kept his stare locked on the screen in front of him.

“Tonight? I thought the convention wasn't until Wednesday?”

The unexpected vibration of my phone made me jump, and I shifted through my purse as I kept my eyes on him.

He plucked at the cuff of his shirt before lowering the screen of his laptop. “It is.” He stood and rounded the corner of his desk until he stopped mere inches from me. “But I want to get there the night before. So be ready by 9 p.m. I’ll have my car pick you up.”
