"Are there a lot of things you haven't done before?"

I toyed with my napkin as I dissected his question. Unsure of how to answer, I settled for watching him shift the small pair of tongs between his fingers before plucking it from the plate. Refusing to break our gaze, he gingerly pushed it past his lips and chewed. At that moment, I knew I lived under a rock because only I would need to fan the flames of my chest as I watched a grown man devour a snail. It seemed effortless as he repeated the process, then he handed over the tongs. My clumsiness shined through like the northern star, resulting in the snail flying across the room. Too embarrassed to see where it landed, I bowed my head into my palms and cringed inwardly.

Peeking my eyes through the slit of my fingers, I slowly lowered them. "I'm sorry, I—"

"It's fine. It just landed in that lady's hair. Don't worry about it." He interjected as he raised his glass to his lips and winked.

"I don't ever do this," I admitted as I plucked at the cuticles of my fingers.

"No? I would have never guessed."

His words were dipped in sarcasm, but even so, I still deflated at the sheer embarrassment.

"I didn't mean to make fun of you. You're just so…fucking cute."

The way he said the words made my lips go from a pout to a tiny smile. His eyes lingered on my mouth, and he swallowed hard before clearing his throat.

"Here," he said, reaching for a piece of the toasted bread that bordered the plate. He dipped it in the sauce, which was green and buttery looking. "It's garlic butter and basil."

He lifted the bread to my mouth, and I looked at it, then at him.

"Don't be shy, baby girl." His words were low.

Baby girl?

I leaned in and took a bite from his hand while he used his other hand to touch my chin and tilt it up.

It's delicious.

Carter pulled his hand back, and I covered my mouth with a giggle as I chewed. "That's really good."

He sat back, watching me like some sort of prey that he wanted to devour as I patted the corners of my mouth with my napkin.

The rest of dinner went on, mostly with him asking me questions about myself as I tried not to knock anything else off the table.

The conversation shifted to his job, where I discovered he was the son of Christian Castle, a major real estate tycoon. My interest piqued.

"Meanwhile, Castle Realty will always be at the top of the industry. It still doesn't help what's going on with the market right now," he said before pausing to sip his drink.

I swallowed down the bite of my salad and licked the dressing from the corner of my mouth. "Because sales are bottlenecking?"

"Right…" His words trailed off as his brows stitched together. "How did you know that?"

I stabbed my fork into the salad and sliced my eyes to the plate. "I am taking night classes for business, and I've been interested in real estate lately."

He forked a piece of his steak and paused. "Really?"

"I mean, I don't know much," I protested.

"Sounds like you know a lot more than most people." He winked and then pushed the juicy meat between his lips.

Butterflies were taking over my stomach, and I felt like a little school girl sitting across from this man. Every wink, smirk, and hand movement had my breath hitching in my throat, and as each second passed, the need to hold my thighs together increased. Taking the last bite of his steak, he shoved his plate to the side and folded his arms across his chest. I wondered if I somehow was under scrutiny with the intensity of his gaze, and then his words left me breathless.

"Um…What?" I fumbled the words off my lips.

I had never seen a man smile so much before I met Carter, but it wasn't just any type of smile. It was salacious, dangerous, and hungry.

'"How much do you weigh?" He repeated.
