It had been a male’s voice on the phone, none that I recognized. Also, if it had been a pack member, they would have mind-linked me instead of phoning. How could the person have possibly known?

Will do, Ray.

I’m going to bed now, so get back to me in the morning, will you?

Sure.

I turned, looking at my mate as she slept. How could I promise her safety if I couldn’t even see our enemies to start with? A heavy weight settled on my shoulders. Was she slowly slipping through my fingers? Would I wake up one morning and find her missing? I couldn’t let my mind wander there. I couldn’t bear the thought. Instead, I slipped into long pyjama pants, a simple t-shirt and carefully lay down beside her, pulling her into me. She stirred but didn’t fully wake.

Nuzzling my nose into her hair, where her scent was thickest, I inhaled and closed my eyes, letting the soothing sounds of her heartbeat lull me to sleep.

She was my home. My heart. My mate.
