CHAPTER 57

MATHEW

The next morning, I sat across from Axel in Shadow Creek’s infirmary, waiting for their pack doctor. We’d been waiting for hours while Raiden was in surgery and Lily asleep, having been administered a sedative to help her calm down. Soon, she’d wake and begin the hard process of adjusting to her new reality. When I looked at her, I couldn’t tell whether she was angry or sad or deeply regretful. Did she feel remorse for saving Ray’s life in exchange for her sight? Or would she have done it over again given the chance to do so?

If I could have had a mere moment with my mate, in the flesh, in exchange for one of my senses, would I have taken it?

Sighing, I lay back in the uncomfortable plastic chair and closed my eyes, if only for a little bit. I’d promised Lily I would make sure Raiden was okay and cared for. I was certain his pack would care for him adequately, but I’d made a promise to Lily and didn’t intend on breaking it, especially not after what we’d shared in that hall.

“Thanks again for phoning me,” Axel said, his deep voice echoing through the empty waiting room.

I opened an eye, glancing at him. Above me, two tube lights glowed, one of them flickering slightly.

“Of course.” I said, straightening, stretching my arms out and rolling my stiff neck.

Axel smiled half-heartedly at me, “I couldn’t believe Ray hadn’t killed you yet.”

I chuckled. “I think if there were more time, he might have.”

He grinned, interlacing his fingers over his stomach, and slid down into his seat, “probably.”

“How much longer is this going to take?”

Blue eyes, the same Lily’s used to be flicked to mine. “Why? Is there somewhere you need to be?”

“Actually, yes.”

“My sister is fine,” he said, closing his eyes again. “Sleeping. And when she wakes up, I’ll be there for her every step of the way.”

I knew that already; how deep the twins’ love for each other went, and knew he’d give up his life in Hollow Stone in a heartbeat for his sister.

“Thanks, Axel. I know. But it’s not that.”

His gaze slid to me again, “then what?”

I straightened in my seat, leaning forward and glancing at the door, making sure no one was out there who could hear what I was about to say. Axel studied me closely, and straightened in his own chair, leaning forward.

“Marie, the witch from my pack, the one I told you about?” Axel nodded. I’d told him exactly what had happened the moment he walked in, approximately twenty minutes passed two in the morning, having ridden here on a motorcycle.

“She told me the entity is still alive. Trapped in Tanya’s body.”

Axel’s mouth fell open, his brows lifting. “But she’s dead, isn’t she?”

“Yes, Tanya is. Her body and mind. But he remains trapped there, within her until his own powers drain and he dies too.”

Beside me, Axel cursed filthily, pressing two fingers to his temples. “So, what do you-?”

“I want to get answers. For Lily.” And for myself, I thought, but didn’t say it. “Before it’s too late. If he dies, all his secrets, Lily’s secrets will die with him.”

Worry lines formed above Axel’s brow. “How much time do we have?”

“I don’t know. Could be anything. An hour, a day,” I shrugged, “there’s no possible way to tell.”

“But how would you be able to communicate with it if her body’s dead? There’s no way she could possibly talk after you removed pretty much all of her throat.”

“Marie,” I said, watching his eyes ignite. “She can do it.”

Axel stood, pacing the tiny room, rubbing the back of his neck. “We should go now,” he said, suddenly stopping and turning to face me. “We should go now and get the answers we need.”

“But I promised Lily I would-,” Axel didn’t wait for me to finish as he exited the room.

Down the hall, I heard him speaking to a nurse. It didn’t take long before he returned.

“Tanya’s body is here, two doors down. We won’t be going far.”

Marie, meet us in the infirmary right now.

On my way, Alpha.

“She’s on her way.” I said, feeling the lining of my stomach contract. I needed to ask, or at least try. I was desperate after all, having searched for answers myself for years and coming up with nothing. If there was one being who could possibly shed some light, it could be him and my time was running out.
