The entity shrieked from within, “no, wait, I’ll do anything. I’ll serve you. Become your slave. Anything, I beg of thee. Don’t do this. Don’t-”

Marie let go. Stepping away and letting the sheet fall back into place. The room had quieted again. Tanya’s body lay motionlessly before us, the silence growing thick. None of us spoke as we stared at it. At what we knew lay beneath.

“No one has to know about this,” Axel finally said, his voice like gravel.

Marie’s eyes flicked to me, I didn’t look up to see, but I felt it. A single stiff nod, and Axel turned, exiting the room without another word.

Your friend contributed greatly to the growth of my kingdom; the words reverberated through my thoughts. I knew it would haunt me for the rest of my life. But Axel. Axel had blamed himself for her disappearance from the very start. He’d be blaming himself for this too. For whatever had occurred in that time, including whatever had been cut from her womb.

Would he tell her? Eventually? Tell Raiden? It wasn’t my place to do so, and I’d already promised secrecy to all I’d heard. If the wolves learned of Celene’s passing, what outcome could it have? The impact of what it meant. Would they still see mates as sacred? Still die in peace when the end of their lives neared?

I stayed in that room until dawn. I’d stayed there until Marie left and the cold had crawled its way up my leg and settled in my stomach. No, higher. In my heart.

It was only when the coroner came in, that I finally turned and left, not even bothering to give an explanation as to why I’d been in there in the first place.
