“Expecting a text?” he asked. He chided himself, realising he should have pretended not to notice. Or was she messaging ‘Peter’ and looking for a reply? He hadn’t checked in all holiday.

“Oh, sorry, it’s rude of me,” Maya said, slipping her phone into her back pocket and looking back out to sea, where Lewis had just fallen off his board and was splashing about in the surf. “I’m sort of seeing someone. I was checking if he’d messaged. You know what the signal is like around here.”

“Oh.” NotwaitingforPeter, then. This was news to Sam. He felt a stab of disappointment. He knew she’d been going on dates, from what she’d confided in him as ‘Peter’, but he hadn’t realised she’d started seeing someone regularly. In person, she hadn’t said too much about her dating to Sam. Had she found someone already? She was a smart woman, with the added bonus of being beautiful, and she came across as a warm, loving person. Considering how her ex-husband had treated her, she didn’t seem to carry bitterness and resentment. Maybe Sam’s pace to dating would be too slow. “Been seeing him long?” He hoped his tone sounded cool.

Maya shrugged. “Not really, about four weeks now, but it started faster than I intended. He’s probably busy with family himself. I don’t want to keep on texting him and scare him off.”

“You won’t do that. Besides, if you do, then he’s not worth it.”

“Ah, thank you. I suppose I don’t want to jinx anything at this early stage,” Maya said, playing with the water with her toes. “It seems to be going so well, I worry it’s too good to be true.”

Trying his best to sound upbeat, Sam replied, “I hope it works out for you. You deserve to be happy.”
