And she also had a potential relationship with Pierce … didn’t she? A relationship she needed to give a chance…

Yikes! Like buses… Nothing for two years, then two men come along, grappling within her thoughts…

At the end of the evening, after saying their goodbyes to Joe, Tristan, Beth and Rhianna, who had arrived later, Maya walked back down the steep hill with Sam, Tom and Heather, feeling merry and relaxed, her ears ringing from the loud music.

Maya smiled to herself at the memories of the last couple of hours. Heather had dragged her and Beth up to dance to a couple of popular numbers. She’d laughed so hard when Joe danced with Tom. Later, Rhianna had joined them, having been able to get away from the bistro early. Joe’s love for Rhianna was plain to see. Sam had sat reservedly watching, clapping and laughing too. Kyle would have been up joining in the fun, she’d remembered thinking, though usually flirting with other women too. Would Pierce be the type to get up and dance? She still had so much to discover about him.

Maya had tried dragging Sam up, but he’d refused, making an excuse to visit the toilets. At the end, after the encore, the pub raucous with clapping and cheering, Sam had helped her into her jacket, steadied her when she’d wobbled, and even opened the door for her. She’d instinctively tucked her arm through his, to keep herself steady as she walked down the hill on tired, Prosecco-filled legs.

The four of them stumbled home and crept into the house, Heather shushing them. Maya stifled a laugh. Happily drunk and giggly, like teenagers caught out drinking late, they walked into the lounge where Rose and Charles were watching television, snuggled together on the sofa.

“How were the kids?” Heather asked.

“Good as gold,” Rose said, switching the television off. “How was your night?”

“Great fun,” Heather said, answering for all of them. “Maya and I even got some dancing in. Sam was the only sensible one.”

“I’ve embarrassed myself enough recently.” Sam glanced at Maya. “Maya didn’t need to see my dad-dancing.”

“You’re not that bad,” Heather said, elbowing her brother.

“See you all bright and early for breakfast,” Rose said, a hint of teasing in her voice.

“Yes, Mum.” Heather kissed her parents, then took Tom’s hand and headed up the stairs.

“Thank you for babysitting my kids, too, Rose,” Maya said, then hiccupped. Oh, hell, where did they come from? Now she sounded more drunk than she actually was. “Think I’d best get off to bed. Goodnight.”

Sam kissed his mother, then followed Maya up the stairs.

“Goodnight, Maya,” he said on the landing, outside Maya’s bedroom door. They stood together, only a foot apart, his brown eyes intense, staring into hers. He pushed a strand of hair off her face. Was he going to kiss her? He leaned towards her, but Maya suddenly hiccupped, making her pull away and press her fingers to her lips.

“Sorry,” she said. Then she remembered kissing Sam would complicate things. And she wasn’t a cheat like Kyle. “Thanks for a great night, Sam.” Hastily, she entered her bedroom. She leaned back against the door, resting her head against it and guiltily imagining what it would be like to kiss Sam. And then she hiccupped loudly again.
