She huffed. Being single was a vicious circle. On the one hand, she had the freedom to do what she liked, but on the other, all she wanted was to find someone to share her days with. Loneliness crept up on her, thinking of the highs and lows life can bring and having no one to share them with. Even her best of friends couldn’t be there for her all the time — they had lives of their own. Whereas a partner created the cement within a house, sticking everything together, filling in the cracks of life, to make your life feel whole. Having a partner didn’t mean being with them twenty-four-seven. Just knowing they were there was enough. Even when Kyle had gone out for a night with his mates, he’d come back to Maya … untilJenna.

But not everyone was like Kyle. And there had been good times. At least ten good years with Kyle

Putting Netflix aside, she logged into Find My HEA and unhid her LoisLane38 profile. She tweaked some of the stuff on there and swapped a photo for a more recent one taken by Selina from when they’d been at the pub. It made her chuckle, remembering how well they’d got on that night, sharing their online dating antics. Maybe she’d find someone to take her out for her birthday? She even sent PeterPan26 a message. He’d gone quiet on her these past weeks, too. Maybe he’d found a date?

She returned to Netflix to choose something to watch. Maya decided against watching a romance — it would only leave her disappointed — and opted for an action movie with a hunky hero, which would have some romance in it, no doubt. She would pause the movie if she started chatting to someone.

The first message Maya received made her wonder if she was doing the right thing, going back online. She huffed and shook her head as she read: Hey, beautiful, how are you finding this sight?

Maya resisted the urge to tell him her eyesight was fine, thank you. He’d only see it as encouragement if she replied. Determined, after her conversation with Selina, not to put up with less than she deserved, she hit delete on the message button. She returned her attention to the film. What had she expected? The first man to message be an intelligent hunk of a guy?

The laptop pinged again and Maya paused the movie to read the message. She had learnt that if she stayed online within the dating site, it generated more messages. She doubted it was a good thing, for she was becoming frustrated. The message was from a guy in the US — an army general, no less: Hello, Lois, you are a beautiful woman. I would love to get to know you better. My name is Grant.

“Why is he messaging me?” Maya talked to the screen. “He’s from the USA. Unless he owns a private jet, don’t bother!” Delete.

Another guy messaged, and Maya did respond to him as his profile appeared half decent. Sadly, the messaging soon came to an end when he replied: LOL!

Maya waited to see if anything else would follow, but it never did, so she decided not to continue messaging him. Hisloss. She refused to keep the conversation going if all she was getting in response was a laugh out loud — continuously. It was just lazy and crap, and too one-sided. She deserved better.

By the end of the film, and with most of the chocolates devoured, Maya climbed the stairs to her bedroom, feeling disheartened and dejected. So much for going for a run earlier to make herself feel better.
