He loved her laughter and her beautiful smile. Peter Pan had told her often enough.

After Sam paid the bill, he said, “Shall we go for a walk?”

“Yes, I’d like that.”

As Maya walked out of the restaurant, her heart full of joy and her stomach full of delicious food, she thought of yesterday, and how it now felt like a distant memory. The upset and the heartache felt surreal compared to being here with Sam.

It being the end of May, it didn’t get dark until late, and so as they strolled alongside the marina, they could see the golden remnants of the sunset on the horizon. The stars were brightening as the sun sank. It wasn’t quite Cornwall, but it would do. A warm breeze blew, gently rattling the riggings of the boats moored in the marina.

“What are you thinking? You’re quiet,” Sam said, taking her hand. How long had she wanted him to do this? How good did it feel?

“The overthinker in me is worrying about the children, and what they will think.”

“Don’t worry. We already know they get on great, even Lewis with Chloe. She likes him. And we don’t need them to know yet.”

“How do you mean?”

“I assure you, we’ll have quality time just the two of us together, but we can still do days out with the kids. Only, we’ll keep ‘us’ a secret, until we’re ready to tell them. If that will make you happier?”

She nodded gently.

Maya leaned on the railings overlooking the lock. Sam stepped closer. He softly pushed some loose strands of Maya’s hair back behind her ear. Then, his eyes intent on hers, he combed his hand through her hair and, finding the back of her neck, pulled her towards him. He kissed her, like she’d fantasised him doing too many times to count. Her body melted against his, her arms looping around his neck as she kissed him back.

How long they kissed, Maya didn’t know, but feeling the heat between them, she gently pulled out of the kiss, pushing at Sam’s chest.

“What?” Sam said, keeping a firm hold of Maya’s waist. “I was only getting started.”

“We’re in public.” Not that there were many people milling around the marina, but there were enough. Plus, houses looked out onto the harbour.

“So?”

“I’m on a three-date rule.” Maya laughed, her hand softly resting on his breastbone, not fully wanting to disconnect.

Sam nodded, releasing his grip, even stepping a foot away from her. “Of course you are. What are you doing tomorrow? Can I pick you up at around two?”

“Make it three.”

“Great.” Sam kissed her, then moved his mouth to her ear, his breath sending butterflies down her spine. “And because I know you like to be prepared,” he whispered, the hairs on her neck responding to him, “pack for a night away.”

Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened to ask, what, why, where … but Sam placed a finger to her lips and said, “Let’s get you home safe before I insist we break the three-date rule.”
