The years fell away. They were young again, enchanted, obsessed, in love. She clung to him, and when she felt his hands on her, pressing, lifting, she swung her legs up, circled his waist, and held on tight. Hoisted above him, it was her turn to plunder his depths, kissing him wildly, as if there was nothing but this moment. No thirty years. No secrets.

If he’d carried her back to the beach, she would have begged him to take her right there.

She felt the water rising, but before she understood what he was doing, he’d plunged them into the sea.

She came up spluttering. He came up laughing. The sight of his mirth written on his face made her laugh too.

“You beast.”

His smile was so wide that his teeth gleamed against his olive skin. “You say we don’t know each other anymore. So come home with me. I will show you my house and tell you everything you need to know.”

She’d go anywhere with him. And do anything he asked.
