"Mmm, I'm glad to hear that. You can stay here as long as you want. If anything makes you uncomfortable, don't hesitate to let me know."

"Thank you...for everything."

"You are welcome. Oh, and before I forget, they know you and Enzo broke up and I think it's better if they didn't know the truth."

"Of course. So, I have been wondering… were you confident you would beat Enzo at poker when you denied his friendly game offer?"

"No. I actually don't know what I was thinking agreeing to the bet. I had just found a chance to give you your freedom.”

"I’m sorry I didn’t believe in you and that I thought you were one of them,” she says softly.

"It's okay. I understand."

"Where did you learn to play poker if you don't mind me asking?"

"I was a soldier a while back and we used to play the game a lot. I have been playing friendly matches with my club brothers but I got my expertise from the base."

"Wow, a soldier. I don't know a lot about poker but I was impressed. Mostly because someone finally beat Enzo."

"And I would happily do it again."

"I’m sure he learned his lesson,” she says.

I doubt he did, he will always think he rules over everything. I probably should watch my back now.

"I think I lost him as my client but that's okay. The few gigs we get will suffice. Can I get you anything?"

"I just need to take a shower, to get rid of the memories of him,” she says.

"The bathroom is right behind you. There are clean towels in there. You can wear one of my shirts if you are okay with that."

"Okay. Thanks."

I stand to leave. "Goodnight, Everleigh, and again, let me know if you need anything."

"Goodnight, Outlaw and I am eternally grateful for what you did for me. I owe you."

"You owe me nothing. Now go take a shower and rest. You deserve it." I leave her smiling and go to sit opposite Jimmy. I am now ready for whatever shit he will throw at me.

"I’m impressed. So, how did you do it?" is Jim's first question when I settle.

"Professionally and that's exactly how you are going to act around her. Remember, you know nothing about her story."

"Got that. So, she will be staying here for a while?"

"She will be staying with me until she finds another place."

"Okay. I am hoping that whatever you did didn't involve blood and pleas for mercy."

"No. Just a lot of games. It would have been a hell of a lot of fun if I had to beat the living shit out of that bastard."

"Does that mean no more road trips to mafia warehouses?" he asks in a low voice.

"Yep. Unless he believes in forgiving and forgetting although I doubt he does.”

I decide to sleep in my office, so as to not disturb the party raging on. I don’t mind sleeping on the couch in here if it means she gets peace upstairs.

The next day I take Everleigh clothes shopping. She wears one of my plaid shirts, the skirt and sneakers she had on the previous night. It looks good, even if the skirt is too short. I think she’s just grateful to not be tethered to someone and to have freedom.
