Face up, a seven of hearts for me, the ten of hearts for her, a six of clubs for the gentleman next to me, an eight of spades in front of Carlos. “Hearts for the lovebirds,” says Carl, which makes Claire giggle, in turn delivering a warm rush to my core.
Carlos slips the next card face down to Claire and me so we can play against each other for the side bet. The gentleman next to me receives the nine of clubs.
Claire stays.
“What do you say, lovebird?” says Claire. “Hit or stay?”
Underneath my seven, ten of diamonds. “I say that kiss is as good as mine.” I tap the felt.
“Hit,” goes the man beside me. Carlos slips him a queen of hearts.
“Bust,” Carlos announces, retrieving the man’s bet. The man sighs and slumps. “I’ll show you mine if you both show me yours,” Carlos says to the two of us.
We all flip our cards at the same time. Carlos reveals a tenof clubs to make eighteen, beating me by one.
Side by side in front of Claire, her initial ten of hearts and the ace of the same suit.
“Blackjack,” says Carlos, placing her win from the house alongside her stacks, then swiping my bet away.
“Sorry to be the heartbreaker,” she says. “I’ll bet you’re a real good kisser, too.” That twinkle flashes in her eye and then she leans forward, closing the gap between us until her tempting, pink lips hover an inch away from mine. “But that wasn’t the bet, was it?”
She slides my chips away from me, combining them with her own. Then she gathers them up and stands.
With a hand on my shoulder, she says, “Maybe we’ll have an opportunity to play again, Ajax.”
“Double or nothing.”
She nibbles her bottom lip again and all I can think of is how much I want to taste her. Then Claire turns and heads off to cash out and I lean back in my chair, watching the way her buttocks move beneath that dress, thinking to myself how extraordinary she is and wondering when I’ll see her again.
Because I must see her again.
