Justin raised his brows, but I walked out the front door.

“This is kidnapping! He could kill me!” Ivy said.

I strode out the front door and down the steps. Justin followed behind and stood at the top of the stairs.

He let out a deep, thick chuckle. “You mean the town hero might hurt you, Mom? I’ve seen the way you looked at him when we were younger. Dad even pointed it out. It took me years of seeing the real world to understand Dad is a piece of shit. You let Sam help you, and I’ll take care of Benji. I have some time off.”

“I don’t agree with any of this,” Ivy grumbled before I swung her back onto her feet, only to lift her up into the truck. I buckled her in before I shut the door and jogged to the other side.

“Why?” Ivy asked as I climbed into the cab.

That was a great question. “You need me.”

She shook her head. “I needed you years ago. This, I can handle on my own. In time, I’ll have them paid off.”

“No, you won’t. The mob will just keep coming around as long as you pay. They won’t go away.”
