Ivy

I’d never seen someone killed before. My eyes couldn’t look away from the two dead bodies in the back of my clinic. Sam was saying something, but all I could think about was the blood pooling on the ground and how I would get the stain out of the cement.

The mob boss had played judge, jury, and executioner. He also still had the gun in his hands, which left Sam in danger.

“We need to call the sheriff,” I whispered, and Sam tensed.

Louis slipped his gun back into its holster and turned toward us. “Ivy.”

His voice was calm and collected, like he was having a business meeting.

“Yes?” I was too scared to say anything else.

He stepped toward us, and Sam pushed me farther back.

“You can talk from over there,” Sam said.

Louis nodded. “I’m sorry my men put you through hell. I’ll make sure I return your money with interest.” He pulled out his phone and tapped on the screen. “In the next hour, someone will come to collect the bodies. If you don’t mind, I have more business to finish.”

Sam cleared his throat. “As you said earlier, we pulled a lot of data on your organization. Are you going to come after any of us again?”

The man tilted his head to the side in consideration. “No, whoever pulled this information is good. I’m impressed they could get a picture in my warehouse. Maybe you can give me their contact information so I can hire them.”

A deep chuckle came from the dumpster, and Antonio stepped out. “Louis, I’ve told you before, we don’t work for the mob.”

The mob boss sighed and shook his head. “I should have known it was you. You barely had to dig because you had everything already. Why the fuck didn’t you just call?”

Antonio tipped his head. “Because I wasn’t sure you weren’t behind it. And isn’t it more fun to meet in person? It’s been a while.”

“Not long enough. You cost me four million dollars last time we were together. I guess this time you cost me two cousins.” He paused. “Where is she?”

“Hello, Louis.” Kat waved from the rooftop before she stepped down the metal ladder. When she reached the parking lot, she continued. “Can’t say it’s nice to see you. Have you listened to me and bought alligators yet? If not, I’m sure I could sell you a couple.”

The mob boss burst out laughing. “Kat, I would give you a hug, but I think your husband would put a slug in me. As for the gators—I don’t have a place to store them in Las Vegas. Next time you guys think I did something, call. We could have cleaned this mess up without me having to fly to Texas.”

Antonio grunted.

“I’m sorry for what they did. Whenever you’re in Vegas, come to the Silver Globe casino and your stay is on me.”

“Hey, why haven’t you let me stay for free?” Kat grumbled as Antonio pulled her into his arms.

Louis laughed. “I wouldn’t trust you in one of my casinos, but you could persuade me by helping move the bodies behind the dumpster for pickup.”

“Why is nobody freaking out about the dead bodies?” I said in a brittle voice.

Sam wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me against his body. “Let’s leave for a while.”

“We should help,” I pointed out.

“Nope.” That was all he said before he swept me into his arms and placed me in the passenger side of his truck.

Kat and Antonio stood over the dead bodies. I still hadn’t wrapped my head around the fact my ex was behind this. He’d drained all my savings, and continued to take money from me. Money I needed to take care of our son.

Sam drove down Main Street. When we reached the junction to head to his place, but he turned in the opposite direction. I didn’t bother asking why, because the man seemed like he was on a mission. Instead, I watched out the window and wondered why Brad hated me enough to send the thugs after me. The night they'd cut me came back to mind. I really thought they would kill me. “Can you send me the information on my ex?”

I wasn’t sure what I would do with it, but I wanted answers. Hell, I deserved answers for what he had done to me.
