“That only works if you beat me to it,” he said, his eyes trained on the house.

As we approached the cabin, and the side door flew open. Their element of surprise was gone. Brad stood on the grass, holding Ivy against him. Blood trickled down her forehead.

The sheriff walked out of the cabin. “I didn’t know what was going to happen! He took us both hostage.”

I shook my head. “Sheriff, it’s too late. Lies won’t change the fact you assisted with her kidnapping. What I don’t understand is why.”

Movement to the right caught my eye as Benji strode up next to us. “It took me a while to figure it out. Dad and the sheriff have been tight for years. A year ago, Mom switched from the drug company dad recommended.”

“You were always the smart one,” Brad sneered.

The sheriff paced behind Brad. “The company gave me kickbacks because I allowed them to run illegal drugs through town, but when she stopped using them, they stopped paying me. I need the money.”

Kat had broken away from the group. Brad’s eyes were on us as she walked around the side of the house. “This bitch owes me money,” he snarled as he tugged on Ivy’s arm.

“I think it’s the other way around, Dad. I’m going to take pride in sending you to jail. I’ll work to make sure I can find every charge to throw at you. I’m not sure if you’ll ever see the light of day,” Justin said.

The man yanked Ivy’s hair, and she screamed. My finger hovered over the trigger, but I couldn’t get a clean shot.

Kat slipped out the door and crept up behind the sheriff. I was careful not to look directly at her and give her away. With stealth, she slid up and wrapped her arm around the sheriff’s neck. The sheriff grunted and Kat tightened her grip.

Brad turned to see what the commotion was, and I steadied my hand and took the shot. Part of me wanted to kill him, but he needed to pay for his crimes.

He screamed and loosened his arms. Ivy dropped to the ground. Justin went after his dad, and I went to Ivy.

I scooped her up into my arms. The blood on her face was from a cut along her hairline. “You’re never taking calls at night or in the morning alone again.”

She gave me a half smile, eyes heavy. “Okay.”

I carried her toward the SUV. Antonio could deal with the shit back at the small house.

“You will not fight me?” I asked her.

She shook her head. “I was scared and don’t want to feel like that again. I was worried nobody would find me.”

I pressed my lips to hers. “I’ll always search for you. “

Nobody would come between us again.

Inside the SUV, I wiped the dried blood from her face before I kissed her lips. She tightened her arms around me, and I was lost in the kiss.

I pulled only an inch away from her lips. “I love you, Ivy. You are mine and never forget that.”

I didn’t wait for her to respond before I kissed her again.
