“Yes, but cuddling up to my clarinet at night wouldn’t be quite the same.”

“Haystack’s a great companion even though he hogs the blanket and eats like a small horse.”

An idea came to her as he began his pre-show preparations. Poor guy. He evenmovedslower. She hoped he wasn’t sick and was keeping it from her. “Hayden, if you want to go home and get some sleep, I’ll cover your shift tonight.”

“Thanks, but I doubt Chuck would approve. Not that you’re not perfectly capable. I might get another Tim to call in, and I wouldn’t wish that on you.”

“True.” Violet thought a moment. “How about doing an impromptu show together?”

Hayden appeared intrigued. “That might work.”

“If you start to nod off, I’ll give you a hearty shove.”

Sitting back, he chuckled. “You’d love that, wouldn’t you?”

“I kind of would.” She lifted out of her chair. “I’ll go ask Charles while you get started.”

“He might have already left the station.”

“You know, there’s this handy little invention called a cell phone. If he’s gone, I’ll call him.” She rarely called the boss outside of working hours, but this qualified as a semi-emergency.

“Hey, Violet?” Hayden called as she headed toward the door. “No matter what anyone says, I think you’re the cat’s pajamas.”

She turned. “Isn’t it the cat’s meow?”

“Same thing, I think, but pajamas sounds more unique. It means you’re a highly admired or exceptionally excellent person.”

She opened the door with a smile. “Try and stay awake. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“That’s what they all say. Promises, promises.”

Less than five minutes later, Violet dropped onto the chair beside him and grabbed the headphones. “By the way, don’t think I’m doing this strictly out of the goodness of my heart,” she told him. “I’m protecting my interests. There’s no way I’ll sit back and be a witness to your tarnishing KGOLD’s luster by falling asleep on the job.”

“Behold, my protector! This is the Violet I’ve come to know and love.”

She looked into his sleepy blue eyes. “Let’s do this, shall we?”

“By all means.” He straightened on his chair. “Here we go.”

Chapter Ten

HAYDEN WATCHED AS VIOLET settled on the chair next to his, facing their boss across the wide expanse of his desk. She fidgeted and twisted her hands before clasping them together over one knee. Bless her heart, she looked as nervous as he’d ever seen her.

Congrats. That’s on your head buddy.

Since he’d run into her at the bakeshop, he’d stopped hinting about meeting with Chuck. Violet was aware he had the advantage, and it apparently irritated her. He should have kept his mouth closed. Then there was her borderline mini-meltdown in the sound booth. He was still puzzling over that episode.

“Violet, I’d like to pitch an idea to you,” Chuck began.

“Certainly.” She crossed then uncrossed her legs. “Pitch away.”

Violet’s leg action drew Hayden’s attention. She looked perfectly respectable and ladylike, but seeing her in a dress again—this one a pretty pink with little white flowers—was a special treat, especially at the station. Tearing his gaze away, he focused on Chuck.

“I’ve already run my idea by Hayden to gauge his reaction, and I’m happy to say he’s on board.”

“For the record, it first came up in casual conversation,” Hayden added. We didn’t cook this up behind your back.

The muscles in Violet’s cheeks flexed.Yeah, she might be a bit peeved.
