Hayden chuckled. “We ate lunch together, met up at our lockers between classes, waited for the bus together, that kind of thing. Very serious relationship.”

“I can tell. Did you hold hands?”

“I wish! The most scandalous thing we did was write notes back and forth.”

“Love notes?”

He grinned. “Love notes areyourspecialty. I gave it my best shot with poems and sonnets, but I stink at rhyming. I tried to describe Katie’s long neck and failed miserably. Comparing a girl’s neck to a giraffeisn’tthe way to win her heart. She wasnotamused. Hence the reason I didn’t suggest penning a poem to Jamie … or whatever her real name is.”

Violet moved her hand over his to still his drumming then pointed to flashingOn Airsign.

“Welcome back, listeners. This is Hayden Brooks, and sitting beside me is the lovely Violet Simmons. We’re here at KGOLD tonight to help you with your questions and concerns about love relationships,” he said in dramatic fashion. “Our phone lines are open. Give us a call, and let’s chat.” He relayed the phone number a couple of times.

As the next caller began speaking, Hayden pushed his notepad across the desk. He tapped a finger on it to garner her attention.

Leaning close, Violet read what he’d written.

Roses are red

Violets are blue

My soul would be forever bless-ed

By the love of a woman like you

Her sigh escaped as Violet read it a second time. The-edto preserve the rhyming scheme made her smile. She wasn’t positive what the drawing was, but she guessed a rose. He’d written this unbelievably sweet poem for her. If it were possible, Violet could feel her heart melting. Over the past few months, especially the last few weeks, he’d morphed from an irritating troublemaker into an irresistible man. She could so easily fall over the edge into love with Hayden.

You’re on the precipice now.

“Try not to judge me too harshly,” Hayden said during the next commercial break.

Violet cleared her throat. “You’re not so bad.”

Not at all.

Chapter Sixteen

“YOU HAVE TO ADMIT, this is a romantic gesture.” Dani pushed the slip of notepaper with Hayden’s poem across the kitchen table. “Bravo, Mr. Brooks!”

Violet smiled. “Yes, it is.”

“What’s the drawing?”

“A rose, I think. What else could it be?”

Dani turned the paper sideways then upside down. “An abstract cat.” She pointed to the drawing. “This is the head. He’s got one big eye, and this line right here is his mouth. He’s standing on his hind legs—they’re crossed—and all four paws are in the air.”

Violet laughed. “I can sort of see it, but it’s still a rose. Final answer. He wouldn’t write such a beautiful poem and then add a drawing of acat. No offense, Snuggles.” The cat snoozed in her nearby bed, paying them no mind.

After reading the poem again, she tucked it in her pocket.

“Don’t think I didn’t see what you just did,” Dani teased. “You’re going to carry that piece of paper around with you.” Dani’s smile spread. “You’ll treasure it as a promise of things to come and a pledge of Hayden’s undying affection.”

“Youarea dreamer, aren’t you?”

“Deny it all you want, but the guy wrote you a love poem, Violet! Do you realize how significant that is? Most guys can’t come up with an original thought. And you have it on paper in his own handwriting. That’s pretty stinkin’ awesome!”

“Hayden rarely suffers from a lack of creativity.”
