Profound? That was pushing it, but she’d take the compliment. As she settled the headphones over her ears to wrap up her show, Violet broke into a big smile and couldn’t care less who saw it.

“Oh, to be young and in love.”

By the time Violet turned around, Jillian was gone.

“OKAY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, it’s time for a commercial break, but hold those comments. I’ll be asking you to weigh in during my next segment. Comments, questions, give me what you’ve got. But first, we have a brand new sponsor tonight, and it’s one of my favorite establishments in Goldenrod.

“Be sure and stop by Bake Love, Not War for one of their scrumptious creations and delicious hot beverages. Tell Maureen you’re a KGOLD listener, and you’ll get twenty percent off your order the nexttwoweeks. You heard that right. This is the time to order all those sweets you need for birthdays, anniversaries, and all your special events.”

Hayden avoided looking at Violet as he started the commercial string and removed his headset. After finishing her show, she’d decided to sit in the corner of the sound booth, quietly listening to his show. He loved having her here even though she highly distracted him.

Pushing away from the desk, he swaggered toward the door like a cowboy. Then cast a backward glance over his shoulder and tipped an imaginary Stetson. His mistake was puffing out his chest and trying to morph into a knight wielding a sword. That was trickier, and he felt like a stiff, clunky Transformer.

Violet burst into laughter. “Don’t hurt yourself over there.”

“Be right back.”

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll be back in less than sixty seconds.” He returned to his chair soon after and handed her a cup from Bake Love, Not War.

“What’s this?” Violet wrinkled her nose. “It’s not old, is it?”

“Take a sip and find out.”

“Delicious,” she said after doing as he asked. “Thank you, Hayden, but how did you, when did you . . .?”

“I had it delivered.” He winked. “Special orders are my specialty.”

Her lips curled. “Yes, they are, but the bakeshop closed hours ago.”

He waggled his brows. “I have connections.”

“Did you get your twenty percent off?”

“No, I got something much better. Your smile.”

She set aside the cup and beckoned to him with one finger. “Come here, Mr. Brooks.”

“I don’t have long before I’m back on the air.”

“You have long enough. Closer, please.”

Smiling, he inched forward. His heart was about to pound right out of his chest.

Surprising him, Violet grabbed the front of his KGOLD T-Shirt, bunching it in her fists, and tugged him toward her.

“Why, Miss Simmons. What’s on your mind?”

She pressed her lips to his and kissed him like he’d never been kissed by a woman—with the love from the purest of hearts and the most precious of souls. A woman who loved her heavenly Father first so that she could love him the way Christ loves His children.

“I love you Violet,” he whispered against her lips. His timing could be better. This scenario could have been better planned, but he loved thatshe’dtaken the initiative to do what he’d wanted to do forever.

“I love you, too, Hayden.”

“Hello, KGOLD listeners. This is Jillian coming to you on the air from Goldenrod, Missouri, in the heart of the beautiful Arcadia Valley. Hayden Brooks has stepped away momentarily, but I’m certain he’ll be back shortly.”

When she cut to the commercial break, Violet and Hayden burst out laughing. After first cutting them a chastising glance, Jillian joined their laughter.
