Great. Now I’ll have to make sure I’m actually useful to him.

Still, before I fully believed him, I tried tossing a few rocks in various directions. It didn’t take me long to prove him right. We were surrounded by a forcefield, herding us straight into the canyon below.

There was no direction to go except into the valley—and Kaio was the one who knew all about the dangers down there. I needed to stick with him if I was going to survive this nightmare.

With a sigh, I unfolded my N-95 mask and put it on. Kaio watched carefully and followed my example. Then we both tied the remaining fabric strips over the masks. The layers constricted my breathing—but that was the goal, right?

“If you die,” he continued, his voice muffled, “I will lose the game. And I can’t allow that to happen. But if it helps, I do not want you to die.”

That made me feel a little better.

Not much. But a little.

“Lead the way, big guy,” I said, gesturing for him to go in front of me.

As we began picking our way down the long, winding path leading into Death Canyon, one thought echoed through my mind, over and over again.

I’m never going home.
