“It’s not really serious,” he added quickly.

“Oh.”

There it was again. That word. Soft and surprised.

Her gaze drifted to the screen, where the movie was playing for a distracted audience.

“You never know.” She turned away from him, curving her body so it faced the television. “It could turn into something serious. Give her a chance.”

There was no one to give a freaking chance to. The girl he was seeing was as imaginary as the Porsche in his driveway.

“This is one of my favorite parts.”

He turned his attention to the movie and the scene she was referencing, but he couldn’t pay attention.

The word fuck just kept looping in his head.

Maybe this was a good thing. He’d put up a fake wall between himself and his attraction to her.

He might not know her super well, but from what he did know, Hannah wasn’t the type to encroach on someone in a relationship. Not that she’d be hitting on him anyway.

She’d made that more than clear in the car.

When the ding of the rice cooker sounded, she about leapt off the couch.

He rose. “Let me help—”

“No, I’ve got it.” She waved him back. “Just enjoy the movie.”

Why in theworld was she disappointed to learn that Eric had a girlfriend?

Hannah’s mouth tightened into a thin line as she busied herself preparing the bowls of food.

I’m seeing someone.

Those three words had made her stomach sink. The disappointment flooding her veins left her confused and tired.

And how stupid had she been to ask the question in the first place? His relationship status really was none of her business. Which she’d quickly realized and said after asking.

Good lord, the poor guy was probably feeling guilty for getting dragged into her drama and posing as her boyfriend at the store.

And now coming home with her when he was involved with someone else? Yikes.

Regret pricked as she grabbed two forks and made her way back to the couch.

“Thank you again for what you did in the store.” The words came out quickly and she thrust the bowl at him. Her cheeks warmed. “If I’d have known you were seeing someone—”

“Forget it.” He accepted the bowl with a smile. “I’m glad I was there to help.”

If that could count as a smile. With the clenched jaw and the storminess in his blue eyes, it didn’t seem super authentic.

Wow, Hannah. You’re really nailing this “making things weird” stuff.

“If I hadn’t been there—” he stabbed a piece of pork “—if something had happened...” He took the bite and closed his eyes.

“I’m sure I would’ve been fine.” She pushed her pork and rice around in the bowl and then noticed his eyes were still closed. “Are you okay? Is it too hot?”
