Chapter Thirteen

He weaved around the group of people and made his way to the water’s edge. “Hey.”

She glanced up in surprise. “Sure you should be talking to me?”

“Yes, I should be fucking talking to you. I want to make sure you’re okay.”

Her eyes widened. Maybe at his statement or maybe at his curse. Who knew? He stood by both.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.”

“No. I’m not. Why on earth did he think that was appropriate?” she blurted, chucking another rock into the water. “Trying to get me back at his sister’s wedding? At her wedding! It’s in such poor taste and only embarrassing to himself.”

She wasn’t wrong. But the urge to explain his friend rose. “He misses you. People in love do stupid things.”

Her laugh was short and full of disbelief. “He doesn’t love me. He loves the idea of us and how we used to be.”

“Well, I think you may have gotten through to him this time.” Eric glanced up the beach to locate his friend, but he had vanished again. “I think he finally got the message.”

“Good.” She paused. “Because I think he really likes her.”

“Likes who?”

“Tori.” She crouched down to grab another rock to toss into the waves. “There’s definitely something between them.”

Was there? Maybe.

“I forgot she’d be here,” he admitted, not about to address her theory. “I’m sorry. Was it hard seeing them?”

“No. A little weird maybe. I want him to be happy. I just need him to realize I’m not the key to that happiness.”

It was hard to agree with that. Hannah was so damn amazing, she could probably be the key to anyone’s happiness.

A gust of soft wind lifted her hair, showing the curve of the back of her neck. The temptation to move close to her and brush his lips against that exposed skin was immediate.

She tossed her head and the hair settled in a shiny curtain around her shoulders again.

Because he knew if he didn’t walk away from her soon, he’d do something entirely stupid, he muttered, “I should get back up there and congratulate Blake and Kristen.”

“Yeah, you should.”

Was there some sarcasm there?

“We wouldn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea about us.”

Oh yeah. Definitely sarcasm. What could he say to that? Not much, because she was right.

“Hannah...”

“I’m sorry.” She grimaced. “Ignore me. I’m just so frustrated right now for a multitude of reasons.”

Likewise.

He gave a small grunt. “I understand. See you up there in a few.”

He turned and made his way back to the wedding group, thrusting his fingers through his hair as he walked.
