I shook my head. “In my professional opinion, I’m fine and ready to get back to work.” I looked at Evan, but he kept walking, joining our IT crew in their office.

TJ frowned at me. “You’ll forgive me if I wait for Sloane to clear you.”

I glared at TJ. “You called Frank?”

Frank Sloane was, in some ways, my other boss. He set medical protocols for all of HEAT and reported up through a chain of command outside of the agency. While he was the natural choice to oversee the medical care of the Alpha Team’s doctor, it was still sneaky of TJ to pull medical rank on me.

“X called him,” TJ said. “The minute she heard you’d suffered a concussion. Sounds like he was out of the country because X said he’d have a long flight, but he’ll be here within the hour.”

Great. The only thing worse than dealing with my pompous medical superior was doing so when he was tired and cranky.

“When were you planning to tell me this?” I asked.

“I’m surprised I need to. You know medical protocol as well as I do.” TJ looked more concerned.

I caught his meaning that I was off my game. The longer I talked with him, the more exhausted I felt. “Fine, I’ll rest. But Evan needs to do the same. How much longer will this—what is it you’re doing?—take?”

“Nice try,” TJ said. “You’ll be fully briefed when the time is right. For now, get some rest so Sloane will clear you. I’m going to need HEAT’s best field doctor to be 100 percent when we’re ready to move.”

I opened my mouth to ask him to elaborate, but he moved too fast and closed the IT door behind him. When I peered into the room, I met Evan’s eyes. He nudged TJ, who also looked at me, then closed those blinds, too. At least I was no longer jealous of them. I was too busy being furious.
