We pulled into the street and drove toward HQ. I hooked up an oximeter and heart rate monitor to Hank to make sure he didn’t have any adverse reactions to the drugs and sat on one side of him. Evan sat on the other, not meeting my eyes.

“Hank was my boss and my friend,” I said quietly. “Nothing more.”

“I shouldn’t have asked,” Evan said. “Not my business.”

“It absolutely is,” I said.

He shook his head. “We had a deal: one night. I have no right to anything more.”

Jensen cleared his throat. It echoed in my comms.

“Fuck me,” I muttered for probably the hundredth time that day. I pulled the comms out of my ear and clicked it off.

Evan did the same. “I’m sorry for acting like a jealous boyfriend just now. I’m usually not that pathetic even when I’m part of a couple.”

Boyfriend. Couple. When my friends used those words, I never felt envy. I never thought I might want a man to be those things for me. But when Evan said them, I wanted to curl into his arms and rest there, like I had on Saturday.

“I was jealous, too,” I said.

He grinned. “Let me guess: when TJ talked about my dimples.”

I smiled. “Yes, then. But also when I saw you bonding with my team.”

He finally looked at me. “Samantha, it’s not like I could ever do your job, and your team would never want to replace you.”

“Not that. I was jealous of how easy you were with them, of how much you all liked each other while you didn’t even want to be near me.”

“Of course it was easy with them.” He reached over my unconscious patient and took my hand. “I don’t have deep, complicated feelings for them.”

When I looked at my vital signs readout after the mission, I knew I would be able to tell exactly when he’d said those words from the spike in my pulse and respiration. “I think we have some things to discuss.”

“Finally.” He looked relieved, and I wondered if he thought I meant friend to friend.

If he did, there was nothing I could do about that. I would speak my truth and let the chips—and the new proposal I had for him—fall where they may. “Tonight,” I said. “After our debriefs and questioning Hank.”
