She raised her eyebrows. “I think you scare more easily than you think. I recognized that woman-I’m-sleeping-with-just-told-me-she’s-pregnant look. You do know it would be way too soon for that to be a known issue, right?”

Just like I’d told myself, and I’d ended up looking like an idiot anyway. “Yes, of course. I think it’s just a reflex.”

“Allow me to soothe your overactive sympathetic nervous system. This is about HEAT and my role in it. My continued role in it.”

“Ha, I knew you would stay!” I pulled her into an embrace.

“You did not know it,” she said. “I didn’t even know it until what happened with Kessler.”

“Joke’s on you, because I knew you wouldn’t leave the first time I saw you with your team.” I backed her toward the bunk. “Doctor Samantha Bond. Have I mentioned how much I love playing doctor with you?”

“You might have.” She wrapped her hands in my hair and kissed me until I nearly forgot my own name. Then she pulled away. “Wait, we have to make it to the toast.”

I backed her closer to the bunk. “They’ll never miss us.”

She laid a hand on my chest. “I think they will, since the celebration is down a few people tonight, and also because Jensen named tonight’s drink after you.”

“He didn’t.” I was pretty sure I knew what was coming.

“He did. He calls it the Sexy Green Beret. I’m not exactly sure when he overheard that.”

“I have a pretty good idea.” I teased her into another kiss, then whispered in her ear. “My long, slow performances in the morning might have made you think I can’t be fast, but trust me, I can.”

“Really?” She nipped at my throat. “The human body never ceases to amaze me. Maybe you should show me. In the interest of science, of course.”

“Oh, of course. But I need you to do one thing for me first, Red.”

“What’s that, Hero?”

“Tell me about the monogamy thing one more time.”

She laid her hands on my cheeks and gazed at me with those beautiful blue eyes, and I knew I’d spend a lifetime getting lost in them. She leaned close and whispered in my ear, “You’re the only man and the only hero I need, Evan Prescott.”
