I shook my head. “Both too smart to think that. They just love me in spite of it.”

We sat in companionable silence for a few minutes. Then the Chicago PD precinct that would most likely soon be my second home came into view.

I shifted in my seat. “Hey Bennet.”

He clenched and released his jaw. “Don’t do it, Prescott.”

“You know I have to.”

He sighed. “Fine. At least wait for me to park.” He pulled into a spot in the police department lot and turned off the engine. He took a deep breath, then nodded. “Go ahead.”

I held out my hand. “Thank you, buddy. You saved me from doing some stupid shit and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

He gripped my hand, then pulled me into a hug. When we sat back, we both had something in our eyes.

“And it’s not like you won’t see me all the time,” I said. “Oh, that reminds me, Red and I are throwing a dinner party next weekend, barring any emergencies. Your attendance is required. Her words, not mine.”

He held up his hands. “Then I’ll be there, because I’ve seen that woman in action and I’m not going to cross her. Now, enough stalling. Go get your shield, you asshole.”

“Roger that, Major.”

I hopped out of the SUV.

“One more thing, Captain,” Bennet said. “About that woman of yours. You’ve got a good partner, there.” He gave me one curt nod. “And so does she.”

I waved and turned away before my asshole of a best friend and old boss had me crying in the parking lot. The last thing I needed was LeBeque seeing that and sharing it with my new crew as one more form of torture. Because Bennet was right, she was going to hire me, she was going to try to make me regret it, and we all knew I wouldn’t. After a couple of hours of grilling me in front of the brass, LeBeque would hand me my offer papers and tell me my start date. She’d introduce me to the major crimes squad, tell them something embarrassing about me, and they’d rib me mercilessly to welcome me into their midst.

But the best part of the day would be when Red picked me up to take me home. That’s when the real celebration would begin.
