He grinned. “I have not yet discovered the appeal, but I do intend to give it my best efforts.”

“I think, so long as we are both doing that, we will be happy together.”

“Choosing one another?”

I nodded.

His grin widened. “I have chosen you since the Hutton’s ball, Liss, and I will continue to choose you every day.”

James leaned down and pressed his lips gently to mine. He kissed me slowly, with all the affection we’d held back and suppressed over the last month finally erupting in our shared tenderness for one another. Time slipped away and nothing mattered outside of this moment and this man. His fingers slid around my neck and curled up so his finger rested gently on my ear. He tilted my head and deepened the kiss, and I knew I could lose myself in him completely.

James leaned back and rested his forehead lightly against mine. He blew out a soft breath, a chuckle whispering on it. “Fact: you are my favorite person in England.”

“Only in England?”

“Fine, in the whole world.”

“Better.” I reached up to kiss him again, then pulled back. “Fact: you are my favorite person in the whole world.”

“You must come up with something original. I believe you gave me that very same rule one night.”

I shot him a wry smile. “Very well. Fact: I did not realize I could feel this happy.”

He grinned and took my lips again, this time with more fervor but no less tenderness.

When he released me, I stepped away and smoothed down my gown. “Time to face the crowd.”

He kissed my temple. “I will be at your side the entire time.”
