Nick searched her face once more and then he nodded, accepting this information. His hand came up and cupped the side of her face, his fingers wrapping over her hair and tangling themselves in her disheveled coronet braid. “You aren’t spoken for then,” Nick whispered.

“I’m not spoken for then,” she whispered back.

Giulia did not know who closed the gap, only that she was kissing Nick, and she was being thoroughly kissed in return. He tasted sweet and tangy, and her lips curved up in a smile when she realized she was tasting her lemon tarts. A small laugh escaped her throat and his answering smile told her that he was thinking the exact same thing. His arm came around her waist and pulled her closer to him, his fingers splaying across her back, before he broke the kiss and held her against him.

“Can I walk you to your room?” he asked.

“No, but you can walk me to the top of the stairs,” she replied.

Nick took her hand and led her to the top of the servants’ stairs and into the foyer. He guided her to the grand staircase and stopped on the landing that separated her wing from his. He pulled her in for another sweet, small kiss, his lips resting on hers long enough to force her heart into an erratic rhythm.

He held her gaze. “Goodnight.”

Giulia turned to walk away and felt her body take flight. It did not matter what happened now. Lily could have the key for all Giulia cared. She had something more valuable. She had Nick’s heart.
