She paused, turning back toward Mac. The sun behind him framed him perfectly, creating an ethereal glow around his bent frame. He straightened, reaching toward her, offering her a small bouquet of larkspur, and her heart stuttered.

She took the flowers, brushing her fingers against his, and dipped her head to smell them. The faintly sweet scent charmed her. “Thank you.”

He nodded.

“Good day, Mac.”

He didn’t say anything else as she fled. Wagner hopped down from his horse and bent to help Mabel into the saddle, and she turned her face away from Mac to hide her wince from his watchful eye. Once she was securely seated, she turned Star back toward the woods, careful not to crush her flowers.

“Will you be wantin’ to go any farther, ma’am?”

“Not today, Wagner,” Mabel called, as she led into the woods. “That is enough for now.”
