Pippa scoffed. “Which is where you are wrong. I asked her if she was hurt, and she responded that she was. I focused on getting her home. I hadn’t thought that she actually hurt herself.”

“Well, I was present for the exchange and thought nothing of it, either. If you are to blame, then I am in equal measure. Elinor even cradled her arm, so I should have noticed when I carried her.”

“We are a sorry pair, are we not? We would make awful doctors.”

“Speak for yourself.” He tucked his chin. “I’ve attended Guy’s Hospital and am quite adept at diagnosing most things.”

Pippa’s eyes bulged. “You are a doctor?”

“No, that was a joke,” he said, grinning. He leaned forward and lowered his voice, catching that faint floral scent again as he lost himself in her dark blue-violet eyes. “But I find that I rather enjoy shocking you.”

Pippa’s smile was warm. She reached over and opened the front door. Light and cold air swept over them, and William was hesitant to leave. He slid his arms into his coat and tugged lightly on his cravat. “Until we meet again, Miss Sheffield.”

She dipped in a light curtsy.

“Preferably sooner rather than later,” he added, sending her an impertinent wink before stepping outside.

He thought he heard her sharp intake of breath, and triumph ran through his veins as he strode away.
