Lily lifted the linen and took a tart. “I should check on Mama. She wasn’t feeling well, but Papa convinced her to come anyway.”

“Did she catch your brother’s cold?”

“No, nothing like that. Exhaustion, I believe. She’s taken on far more laundry than she should have these last few weeks, if you ask me.” Lily took a bite of the tart and groaned in delight.

Pippa squeezed her friend’s hand before turning to make her way toward the tables.

Pippa glanced toward Mac and found him speaking to Roger, William missing from their circle. She faced the table. Plates and baskets covered the space with more food than they could possibly consume as a whole. Pies, hams, rolls, and sliced apples and pears overflowed the tables. People milled about, eating from plates and chatting amiably.

William stepped up beside her, and Pippa’s entire body reacted with alertness to his presence. She wasn’t entirely sure what it was that he did to her heart, but she knew it beat a double rhythm, its pace increasing with his proximity. It would be best to fight her growing attraction to this man, but she didn’t want to.

Pippa didn’t entirely trust William, but she hoped she eventually could. And there was only one way to do so...she needed to get to know him better.
