“I wanted to stand out, Love. Release her.”

The straps opened, and I rushed to sit up. Immediately a spell of light-headedness hit me, and I stumbled backward.

Tschenkar caught me, but he was covered in blood and bruises. He winced even as my soft and light body pressed against his wounds.

“Everyone with Eden speech patterns has the feel for the way you women put your roles into your name. If they’re calling you Engineer, it’s because that’s how they see you now.”

It would have felt too much like gloating to acknowledge just how good that felt. Then it hit me thatHarbingerwas gone. “Goddess, your ship is gone, Tschenkar. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s the pack that makes the ship,” he said. “As long as most of my pack is still alive, thenHarbingerstill lives.”

“Map,” Tschenkar said.

“Warning: Power Reserves Low. Your request will—”

“Just do it!” He grunted.

A map came up.

I leaned forward to study it.

“Do you know where we are?” he asked.

I looked at the map. We were about 100 kilometers west of Ginsburg, but on the wrong side of the mountains.

“There’s a pass,” I said, “a narrow one.”

I pointed to it.

“That’s almost 100 klicks north of here,” he said, “can’t we just go over these hills?”

“You might be able to,” I said, “under normal circumstances.” I looked pointedly at him. There was no big specific wound to look at, because his whole body looked like one big injury. I was surprised he was even able to stand. “It’s cold up there too. They’re mountains. Not hills.”

“Give us a climate readout,” he said, “forecast for the next few weeks, include snow storms, wind data, and—”

Abruptly the map shut off. Then the lights. We were enclosed in perfect darkness together, but this time Thuliak wasn’t with us. This was a bad darkness rather than a sexy darkness.

“Shit,” he said. “I thought we’d have more time.”

“If it’s cold out,” I said, “we—”

I heard the sound of something hissing, and then the sound of rustling fabric.

“Put this on,” Tschenkar said.

“I can’t even see.”

“Feel it out.”

I did as he said. It was big snow overalls that went right over the dress I was wearing. I got the overalls over my shoulders, then found the jacket and got it on. There were gloves and a hat in the pocket, which I put on as well.

“Did you put clothes on too?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said.

“It will be the first time I ever see you with clothes on. Funny how I see you naked so much that seeing you with clothes on is going to be like seeing you naked.”

“Don’t get used to it,” he said, “I feel like I’m suffocating my balls. Like they can’t breathe.”
