“Love,” he said, “I can see the anger on your face. Engineer. My Engineer—”

“Don’t try to humor me!”

“Fine,” he said, “I won’t,” and he began to speak on, but it was in another language. Proto-Khetar. I couldn’t understand a word.

Thuliak laughed, then said something in Proto-Khetar, but the middle of the sentence hadAirlockin it.

That’s when I decided to leave.

Tschenkar finally cameout and handed me the headphones. “We’re done. It’s time to say goodbye to him. We’ll call him again though in a few hours.”

I got the headphone near, but noton, my ear. “I’m here,” I said.

“I love you, my little human,” he said, voice so distance and tinny I could barely hear him.

“I love you too,” I said.

“It won’t be long,” he said, voice fading, “until we’re together again.”

I was crying. “I know.”

“Tschenkar will keep you safe. If he doesn’t, I’ll kill him. I was very clear about that.”

“That doesn’t actually make me feel better.”

He laughed. “I’m only partially joking—”

And then the connection died. The battery was dead.

“We need a new battery,” I said. “And you need to tell me what you two talked about.”

Tschenkar nodded as I carefully put the radio and headphones away. “Allow me to summarize the plan. We’re short on time. Let’s get the others. They’re staying with us.”
