“...love…Airlock…”

It was him.

“I love you too. Please, Thuliak, we’re…”

No, I couldn’t try to get complete sentences out. If I repeated the same words over and over, thenmaybea short message would get through to him. It has hard to plan when I didn’t know where anyone was. I didn’t know where Tschenkar was, and I didn’t know if Kantus would survive or not. The only thing I knew was that we were in immediate danger, and ifWrathwas still in orbit, I couldn’t count on a rescue from Thuliak to save us. I’d have to assume that we’d make it through, and the best thing I could probably do was to give Thuliak a place to look for us.

The ski resort. It was the only place I could think of. It felt like a defeat to go right back to where we’d first met Julia and Cleopatra, but I needed something Thuliak could see from orbit, or at least something he could see on his way down through the atmosphere.

It was an emergency measure. If everything worked out, I’d find him—and Tschenkar—in Ginsburg.

“Ski lodge,” I said. “Ski Lodge. Ski Lodge. Ski Lodge.”

Cleopatra looked back at me like I was losing it.

“Ski Lodge. Ski Lodge. Ski Lodge. Ski. Lodge.”

“Engineer!”

“I thinkWrathis on its last legs,” I hissed at her. “I’m only getting a few words at a time. Take us back to the ski lodge, Ski Coach.”

She nodded and tugged, turning us almost 90 degrees, toward the South.

“What if the pirates have already found the ski lodge?” she asked.

“We’ll probably be able to tell from far away. If we see there are pirates there, then we we’ll find another safe place to go,” I said.

Or we’d wait nearby. For Thuliak to arrive and make it safe for us.

“Goddess,” she said, tears falling down her cheeks, “I hope Kantus is okay.”
