Something streaked across the darkness, a burst of light just through the foliage above, which was like black shadows draped across the stars. Another ray of light streaked through the black.

I heard snow sliding down, and then I heard Midwife grunting as she slid down toward me.

Three more streaks rushed across the small window I had on the sky above. Three golden lines across the dark night above.

“Midwife, what’s going on?”

I craned my neck to try to see more of the sky, but—

But a streak blazed through the trees above us. Fire erupted around the leaves as flames licked and vaporized everything above us. Orange light filled the forest, and Midwife slid down through pale-orange snow, stumbling up to my side and taking my hand.

The fire had cut through a tree, fire moving nearly as fast as a bolt of lightning. Now it sat on the snow as a glowing orange orb of light. The trees above and behind it were on fire. Flamed and melting branches fell into the snow. Hundreds of lights streaked across the sky, casting light down into the forest like a small, flickering sun.

The light from the orb in front of us died down as spherical shell melted and fell away. The light from the melting orb cast onto the man—the Khetar—inside. His skin was teal like Thuliak’s, but he was not Thuliak.

Above him, the golden streaks were dying down, their light fading as their numbers dwindled. Each streak was an orb like this, containing a single member of Thuliak’s pack.

Would Thuliak himself be in one of these orbs? There were thousands of them. One of them must have been Thuliak.

Midwife Cleopatra squeezed my hand. “Eve, I think it’s raining men.”
