“We need him to protect Eden,” Emissary said, “whatever the cost. Find out what he wants, Airlock, and give him as little from us as you can get away with.”

Airlock nodded, then looked at me, as if she were ready to go start the negotiation, but wanted to hear what I had to say first.

“Get me an alien, Airlock,” I said, craning my neck to see his dingdong hanging between his legs. “That’s all I’m in for right now.”

And once I got an alien, then I’d start working on understanding the alien weapons. I thought it better not to say that part out loud right now. If Thuliak could remotely disable our technology, I found it laughably naive to assume he wasn’t eavesdropping on us right now—either directly or through some machine on his ship.

Emissary cocked her head at me. “Getting an alien is all well and good, but what about the future of our planet, Weapons Sojourner?”

I decided that if Thuliakwaslistening, I wanted to make sure he didn’t perceive me as a threat. “We’re tainted,” I said. “It’s not my planet anymore. Just get me an alien dick, Airlock.”

Emissary scoffed and shook her head at me, then switched back to her big High Command voice. “Listen carefully,” Emissary said, “now that both of you are tainted, I can share classified information from High Command with you. This alien is a man, and I need you both to listen carefully because men have specific weaknesses we need to be able to exploit.”

I would have given anything to hear what she was about to tell us as gossip back on Eden, but now I was simply interested in any little edge I could get against whatever Khetar man I’d end up with.

“Like what?” I asked.

Emissary smiled. “Let’s start with the male ego.”
