“We are clear, Chief Hypatia. May I also add something?”

Weapons scowled at me. I believe it was the first time she’d done that to me, and even though she was showing me her displeasure, I still liked the way it made her feel more familiar with me. I shot her a grin, which made her scowl almost disappear entirely.

“You may,” Chief Hypatia said.

“From my understanding of High Command,” I said, “High Command did not allow you to live freely.”

There was silence on the other end, which earned me an extra scowl from Weapons.

I muted the comms. “What? I’m trying to win her over.”

“I’ve already got her on my side,” Weapons hissed. “All you’re doing is digging yourself into a deeper hole.”

Weapons probably thought I was pushing our luck, but I needed to win Chief Hypatia over, and it was going to take a while. I needed to start now.

Hypatia’s voice crackled back onto the comms. “I wasn’t totally free before,” she said. “But High Command looked the other way.”

“You’ll be more free than that with us,” I said.

“You teal-skinned men are going to turn everything upside down,” she said. “How many years of utter chaos and instability will the women of Eden have to endure before things calm back down? Tell me I’m wrong.”

“You’re wrong,” I said. “We’re not all teal-skinned. My skin is gold.”

“Stay in the airlock,” she grunted, and she cut off the comms.

Weapons shoved me, which only served to push her further away from me. I was significantly more massive than she was.

“Great job,” she snapped. “You really won her over. Your charm isn’t going to work on her. You realize that, right? She’s immune. That’s specifically why High Command put her in charge.”

“My charm?” I said, cracking a smile. “So it works on you then?”

She tried very hard not to smile back at me, but she failed, and her face turned a wonderful shade of crimson red.

“Make sure you stay in the airlock,” she said through gritted teeth.

“I promise,” I said, “that my golden body will remain in the airlock until High Command authorizes me to access the rest of the ship.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “Why does that sound like you’re giving yourself some kind of wiggle room?”

I shrugged, and I did a much better job of concealing my smile than Weapons did.
