I thought of looking up at Kaav to smile at him for staring at my boobs, but reminded myself that successfully playing along with Hive was potentially life-or-death.

The air hissed again. The pressure was equalized.

The moment the door slid open, Hive strutted forward and out of the airlock. His silver body was glistening. I didn’t know why it was glistening, but it was, and it was glorious. The little beads of sweat dripped down and around his cut and chiseled abdominal muscles. He was slightly taller than the golden body, but not quite as wide.

My eyes fell down to his cock. I gulped, because it was partially hard. I flicked my eyes toward Kaav’s golden cock. It was just as hard as Hive’s, even if his jaw was still clenched tight. He was balling his fists up too. The muscles in his golden forearms bulged.

His silver eyes never left mine though. I was transfixed.

“Hive,” he said, reaching out his hand toward me.

“I know,” I whispered. I hadn’t meant for it to come out as a whisper, it just had. “I’m Weapons Sojourner. Kaav’s…”

I was going to say Kaav’s lifemate, but I didn’t know if humans used that word or not. It sounded kind of like an alien word to me. When I couldn’t think of a better word, I just left at that: I was Kaav’s.

He was still holding out his hand. I took it, and he pulled me in toward him. Dangerously close. His lips brushed against my earlobe as he spoke, which made me shudder. “We’ll be together soon.”

I nodded to him and pulled away. I tried to stare him down the same way I’d stare down some Khetar I had never met and was afraid of.

“You’re in charge?” Hive asked, looking over at Chef Hypatia.

She nodded. She seemed less disgusted by Hive than she had been by Kaav. She seemed more impressed. Kaav had really talked him up.

“I can get you more Khetar,” Hive said. “How many do you need? I’m guessing 100 is about the right number?”

Chef’s eyes widened. “Yes…100 would be excellent. But that seems—to me at least—not especially possible.”

“Not yet, no,” Hive said. “Soon though, very soon. I presume you’re going to get all the women from High Command you can into space, but bolster their numbers with woman who crave Khetar cock, keeping them loyal by giving them what they crave. Do I have it about right?”

Hypatia just nodded.

“Their ships will start failing soon. I’ve already gotten a crew of defectors from Eriok’s ship waiting to join once the moment is right.”

“What about your ship?” Chef Hypatia asked.

She assumed he was a scion. He’d have to be if he was as powerful as Kaav had played him up to be. Was he going to pretend he had his own packship? That seemed like a hard thing to bluff.

“What about it?” Hive asked.

“I—” Hypatia started, but Hive cut him off.

“I have defectors from Eriok’s ship. Their cocks will please your women and keep them loyal to High Command. Your lesbian fortress will float high in orbit above the tainted lands below. The women who used to control you will now be under your control. If only briefly.”

“I don’t care about controlling anyone,” Hypatia said. “I just want to keep the good things I had in my life. If I have to control some people for a while to get what I want, then so be it.”

Hive waved a hand, as if he maybe accepted what she said, but didn’t really care either way.

“How will the ships fail?” Kaav asked, voice grave. Goddess, he was playing this so well.

“Oh,” Hive said. “The Hive Mind isn’t there anymore. The packships can’t stay together without it.”

I wanted to say something. This didn’t seem like the smartest bluff. Or did Kaav plan to have us all out of here before Hypatia realized that the packships were never going to fail?

“You’ll have to walk me through how the Hive Mind is just gone,” Hypatia said. “It sounds…unlikely.”

“Hive,” he said, pointing to himself with his thumb. “Get it? Oh, fuck, of course women who name 60% of their children ‘Eve’ wouldn’t read too much into a name. I’m the Hive Mind.”

Hypatia met my eyes, and then she looked toward Kaav. “I was told the Hive Mind is a super-intelligent AI that spans the galaxy. How couldthisbe it?”
