‘But you wouldn’t leave again, would you, Joey? If something else bad happened, I mean?’
‘Do you mean, something bad like the reason you had a fight with Mum? What’s really going on, Daisy?’
She pressed her lips together and stared broodily into the fire.
‘Daise?’
She tucked her face into his shoulder. ‘Quit bugging me and just do me a favour. Tell Mum you’re going to stay in Clarence.’
That was a non-answer if ever he’d heard one. ‘She knows that already.’
‘Tell her again.’ His sister gave his hand a squeeze. ‘And thanks for having us for a sleepover, Joey. Even though we invited ourselves.’
‘Any time.’
He sat with her and watched the log burn down to ash. Something was going on, and it was more than just Pete’s hints that Joey needed to get out more. Felicity was angry with him, Daisy had rocked up unannounced to cry on his shoulder, Patty had been huggier than usual … something was going on.
Something in the family.
Perhaps it was time he got his head out of his own arse and started getting involved. With the Miles family. With Bangadoon. And with the meddlesome locals of Clarence.
